While Titanic 's all-time highest box office gross of $600.8 million is still out of reach for The Dark Knight, the Caped Crusader was able to cross another milestone this weekend.
Three-day estimates have Knight crossing the $500 million mark this weekend with a haul of $8.75 million and a total gross of $502.4 million.
The new milestone makes for a great end note on what has been an extremely successful summer for the latest installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman series. The film has broken records every step of the way in addition to winning universal critical praise.
While rumors have been circulating on the internet about who will be the next villain in the series (Angelina Jolie as Catwoman, Johnny Depp as The Riddler, Philip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin, etc.), no official news has come out as to whether or not Nolan and his creative team will make a third film.
Knight will add even more to its pockets when it hits DVD this fall and the inevitable Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for Heath Ledger will lead to a surge of interest in the film.
