You know, there are cultural tragedies and then there are Cultural Tragedies. And among the latter, I am shocked to discover that there is no currently available DVD of the 1990 shoot-em-up classic Street Hunter, co-starring and co-written by my old college bud, the late great Steve James . Rightly dubbed The King of the B-Action Film by The Phantom of the Movies® , Steve had a pretty amazing career. Mostly he worked in lower budget flicks where things had a tendency to blow up pretty good -- basically, if it starred Michael Dudikoff and had a colon and a roman numeral in the title, Steve was in it.

Last week’s announcement that Universal Studios would bring the popular kid’s series, Where’s Waldo to the big screen left many scratching their heads and asking: What’s next? Could a flick about Bazooka Joe, the eye-patch wearing bubble-gum chewing jokester or even a Hollywood version of the board game Monopoly be far behind? Brace yourself: Both projects are in various stages of development and could soon join such other questionable adaptations as Clue, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Rocky and Bullwinkle.

Nia Vardalos only has one hit film to her credit—the sleeper comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding. But she remains among the most prominent Greek actors in Hollywood. This week, Vardalos returns to the big screen in , in which she plays a Greek tour guide searching for her kefi—or mojo in laymen’s terms. It’s a sloppy wet kiss to her homeland, a lightweight comedy showing off some of the country’s most attractive vistas and historical sites. The movie may not vault her back to the top, given the bruising competition at the box office this weekend, but her impact isn’t lost on her fellow Greeks.

May Box Office Recap

The monthly box office for May 2009 set a new record for the month. A new monthly record has now been set in four of the first five months of 2009 thus far, with the lone exception being March. The overall box office for the month of May totaled $1.02 billion, which outpaced the $949 million box office of May 2008 by 7 percent and topped the previous May record of $952 million set in May of 2003. However, when adjusting for ticket price inflation, May of 2009 fell short of the $1.14 billion adjusted record of May 2002, as well as the adjusted performances of May 2003 and May 2004.

Effective Trailer Premieres

Right now, millions of Twilight fanatics across the country are flocking to the web in order to obsessively watch footage from the latest film in the lucrative teen vampire franchise. The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the sequel to last year’s teen smash, debuted its first trailer (see below) Sunday night during the MTV Movie Awards telecast, which presented Twilight with five awards, including Best Movie. The trailer is also now playing in HD at New Moon, starring Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Dakota Fanning, will hit theaters November 20.
