Zurich Film Festival to Spotlight Brazil on March 11, 2013

zurich.jpgThe 9th annual Zurich Film Festival in Switzerland will headline Brazil, a country halfway around the world, and farther away still in temperament. Timed to just before Brazil takes center stage by hosting the 2014 World Cup, the Zurich Film Festival will showcase 12 Brazilian films -- both documentaries and features -- plus a special block of Brazilian shorts. The Brazilian government recently made a multi-million investment in promoting their films at foreign festivals, and this announcement could be the first sign that their efforts are paying off. Specific titles have yet to be announced. The Zurich Film Festival kicks off on September 28, 2013.

'A Good Day to Die Hard' Bests 'Live Free or Die Hard' At Brazilian Box Office on March 10, 2013

In the States, A Good Day to Die Hard has been a disappointment, making a mere $63.3 million at the box office in its first month of release -- domestically, it will be the lowest-grossing entry in the Die Hard franchise. At best, Good Day will make just over half of 2007's Live Free or Die Hard's $134.5 haul. But in Brazil, this fifth flick is surpassing its predecessor at the box office: it held on to number one for two weeks, and should rank 2nd in its third week of release. To date, it's raked in $7.1 million, nearly $2 million more than Live Free managed during its entire run -- and that's despite terrible reviews. However, the growth may be attributable less to the Die Hard franchise and more to the burgeoning box office potential of Brazil itself. Though the climb looks like good news for Fox, it could really just be good news for every Hollywood studio looking to sell tickets in South America's biggest market.

Can 'Oz' Beat 'Alice' at the Brazilian Box Office? on March 09, 2013

oz_shot.jpgDisney's Alice in Wonderland was a solid hit in Brazil, opening to $6 million and going on to rake in a total of $28.3 million -- a sizable sum in a country where $20 million is often enough to crack the year's top ten. The big test for Disney is if Oz: The Great and Powerful can do it again. Or better, if it can break Alice's record. After all, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters should end its run in Brazilian theaters with nearly the same haul, which given that it lacked the Mouse's mighty advertising budget says a lot about the country's growing appetite for theatrical fare. Midnight shows already prove that Oz should handily own the weekend -- but can it break Hansel's current hold as the top film of 2013 to-date?

Tom Cruise headed to Rio to Promote 'Oblivion' on March 07, 2013

Oblivion.pngOblivion, the futuristic thriller directed by Tron: Legacy's Joseph Kosinski, opens in Brazil on April 11th -- a full week before it hits theaters in the U.S. -- and Universal Pictures wants to make sure the early launch triggers some great international buzz. To make sure Oblivion looms large on the country's radar, Tom Cruise has just announced that he'll be heading to Rio on March 27th to promote the film. The trip will be Cruise's fourth time in Brazil in five years following promotional tours for Valkyrie, Knight and Day, and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Oblivion also stars Oscar winners Morgan Freeman and Melissa Leo, plus Bond girl Olga Kurylenko.

BOX OFFICE ACTUALS: 'Die Hard' Narrowly Outdoes 'Beautiful Creatures,' 'Red Dawn' Sinks on March 06, 2013

As predicted, Bruce Willis continued to conquer the Brazilian charts as A Good Day to Die Hard clung to #1 for the second week in a row. But the teen witch romance Beautiful Creatures was right at its heels with a respectable $1.3 million debut and a slightly higher per-screen average. The highest per-screen of the week was 4th place contender Silver Linings Playbook, which pulled in $3,363 per-screen in its fifth week in theaters. More than a month into their releases, it and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters managed to fend off low-batting newcomers Buddies and Red Dawn, which had to settle for 7th and 9th on the Brazilian box office.
