CHINA: 'Pacific Rim' Holds Against Strong 'Tiny Times 2' Debut
on August 14, 2013
Pacific Rim is still hot in China but it has tough competition ahead. Tiny Times 2, the sequel to the controversial smash hit released earlier this year, brought in a strong $26.9 million over its first four days in release. Pacific Rim was able to hold to its record breaking lead from last week, however, adding another $33.6 million to reach a total of $79.5 million in China. Guillermo del toro's high concept tentpole will see the biggest boost in its overseas box office numbers from China, where Pacific Rim is already Warner Bros.'s highest grossing release of all time in the market. If Pacific Rim can hold in coming weeks, there is a chance for the film to gross more in China than in North America.
Fast & Furious 6 is another big performer in China. The Fast sequel brought in $8 million last week and reached a $63 million total in the market.
Two of Sony's troubled releases have saved face in China. After Earth is culminating a month-long run with a $34.5 million cume, while White House Down is still putting up a fight in its third week by adding $1.61 million to reach a $27.9 million total.
