How to Train Your Dragon 2 opened in China this weekend, taking a commanding lead with $25.9 million from 3,379 locations. The debut represented an eightfold increase above the opening weekend tally of the original in the same market.
Local product stayed on top for another week in China thanks to the continued success of The White Haired Witch of Lunar Kingdom, which snagged another $19.6 million for a domestic total of $56.6 million.
Hollywood's Brick Mansions is holding up quite well. The action flick is up to $22.5 million.
Transformers: Age of Extinction added $5.4 million to its Chinese tally over the weekend, its fifth frame in the market. The Transformers film played at 3,800 locations and reported a $1.4 million bump from IMAX sales. China is the top global market for the film with a $301 million cume, nearly a third of the movie's $963.3 million global total. China's Age of Extinction IMAX cume currently stands at $36 million.
Local teen drama Tiny Times 3.0 posted a healthy $50.1 million haul over four days, which was enough to edge Transformers: Age of Extinction out of first place. Age of Extinction is currently up to an impressive $306.3 million in China after taking in another $26.1 million.
The Tiny Times franchise is quite polarizing in China. While author/director Guo Jingming's films have clearly struck a chord with many young fans, others blast the franchise for its emphasis on material wealth. It's also quick to be labeled "Sex and the City without the sex."
Age of Extinction's strength in China continues to impress. There is no way that the North American haul will hit $300 million, so China has cemented its position as the #1 market for the sci-fi extravaganza.
Transformers: Age of Extinction is still earning in China. The film grossed $9.6 million from 4,400 locations in its fourth weekend in the market, bringing its local cume up to $285.7 million.
