Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit found a friendly welcome in China. The spy film took a $9.5 million debut from 4,000 screens to claim the #1 spot in the market. The thriller narrowly edged the $8.4 million performance from Despicable Me 2 in its first hold. Jack Ryan opened 123% above the Jack Reacher debut in China.
Despicable Me 2 posted a strong hold in China as it added $8.4 million from 4,500 dates to its running total, a 37% dip from its opening weekend. This brings the 11-day total for the animated sequel to $33.5 million.
Despicable Me 2 has already passed the lifetime total of Monsters University in China ($32.6M) after two weekends in the market. It is currently the seventh highest grossing animated import of all time in China.
A $15.37 million debut launched Despicable Me 2 to the top of the box office chart in China. It took eight months for the film to premiere in the world's second biggest box office market, and it did so without the benefit of having its predecessor, Despicable Me, receive a theatrical release in the country.
Universal had originally estimated a $13.8 opening for Despicable Me 2. The number was revised to $14.4 million by Monday before data from consulting firm Entgroup confirmed a $15.37 million. This makes Despicable Me 2 the third biggest animated opener of all time in China behind Ice Age: Continental Drift ($19.4M) and Kung Fu Panda ($16.2M).
Ender's Game finished its first week in release with a $10.96 million bow. The Chinese premiere pushed the film's box office past the $100 million global mark; an important milestone for a film that was never able to take off in North America, ending its theatrical run in its home market with $61.7 million.
Police Story 2013 slipped down to third place after two consecutive weeks on top of the chart. The Jackie Chan film added $8 million to its tally in order to reach an $81.17 million total. Personal Tailor took $5.25 million from its fourth frame to bring its Chinese cume up to $112.54 million.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones finished its second week in the bottom half of the table with a $1.6 million hold. The film has grossed a total of $4.26 million in China.
