Hercules enjoyed an overseas box office boost after recording a $9.6 million opening weekend from approximately 4,700 sites in China. The film has now grossed over $160 million outside of North America.
Guardians of the Galaxy crossed the $80 million mark in China over the weekend. The film earned $6.5 million in its latest frame, taking its estiamted cume in the market up to $84.4 million. Guardians has grossed over $400 million overseas and $700 million worldwide and is currently the third biggest film of the year at the global box office behind Transformers: Age of Extinction and Maleficent.
China became the top grossing overseas market for Guardians of the Galaxy over the weekend. The film put in a $22.3 million performance in the market, only a 28% drop from its previous frame. Guardians has now earned a total of $69 million in China. The film has grossed $404.8 million in its overseas run and currently stands at $732.6 million globally.
Tuesday, 10/14/14 Update: EntGroup reports that Breakup Buddies is up to a staggering $151.3 million after only 13 days in theaters. The comedy took in $48.6 million last week, which was enough to keep it in first place.
Guardians of the Galaxy has already snagged $30 million since opening this past weekend. Early estimates had the Disney/Marvel effort taking in close to $27 million during its debut frame in the Middle Kingdom.
Tuesday, 10/7/14 Update: Xu Zheng and Huang Bo, the stars of 2012's breakout Chinese comedy Lost In Thailand, have another massive hit on their hands. Breakup Buddies has already earned an impressive $93 million worldwide.
China Lion is distributing the film in North America, where it has already earned $240,000 from 20 locations.
Guardians of the Galaxy continues to strike Marvel gold around the world. The film opened to an estimated $26.6 million in China, the third largest ever bow for a Disney film in the market behind Iron Man 3 and Captain America 2. The opening weekend estimate also represents the biggest industry opener of all time in China for an October release. Guardians of the Galaxy has already outgrossed the Chinese totals of Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America after only three days of release. IMAX is estimated to have contributed $4 million of the figure from 165 screens, enough for 14% of the opening's market share. Guardians has grossed a total of $361 million overseas and $687 worldwide.
