TWC Snatches Up Wong Kar Wai's 'The Grandmasters' on February 07, 2013

Deadline's Mike Fleming reports that Wong Kar Wai's The Grandmasters has landed in the nurturing hands of The Weinstein Company. TWC has acquired all rights in the US and English-speaking Canadian territories from Annapurna Pictures, and rights to Australia, New Zealand and the UK from Wild Bunch.

The Grandmaster's box office total in China is a solid $45.3 million, but the film's run has been overshadowed by the recent release of two Hollywood heavyweights: Skyfall and Cloud Atlas.

Wong Kar Wai's last feature-length film to open in North America was 2007's My Blueberry Nights, a drama that featured performances by Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Rachel Weisz and Norah Jones. My Blueberry Nights tallied only $867,142 stateside.

BOX OFFICE: 'Cloud Atlas' Shows Strength on February 07, 2013

THR reports that Cloud Atlas has grossed $15.2 million in China as of Tuesday. Word of mouth is strong in China for a film that polarized American moviegoers. There's a very real chance that Cloud Atlas' Chinese gross could top its $27 million North American haul.

BOX OFFICE: 'Skyfall' Fends Off 'Cloud Atlas' on February 05, 2013

Skyfall stayed in first place over Jan. 28-Feb. 3 frame with a solid $16 million. The spy flick is now up to $50.9 million in China. A total haul of around $60 million looks likely at this point.

Cloud Atlas made $11.3 million in first four days of release. That's a promising start for a film that's had trouble finding its footing in other countries. The North American haul is $27.1 million.
