Disney's and director Sam Raimi's Oz: The Great and Powerful relieved the doldrums of this year's box office with a big $24.11 million opening day, including $2 million from 10pm and midnight shows late Thursday. That's the biggest debut of the year so far, topping Identity Thief's $11.1 million first day take and putting Oz on pace to more than double that film's weekend debut.

By comparison, The Lorax opened to $17.5 million on Friday last year toward a $70.2 million opening weekend. 2010's Alice in Wonderland pulled a $40.8 million Friday (with a $3.9 million midnight launch) on its way to $116.1 million over three days. Perspective is required, though: because of The Lorax's lack of a "fan rush" factor versus Alice's significant appeal from Johnny Depp, Tim Burton, and the 3D craze at the time of its release, we expect Oz's internal holds this weekend to land in between the trajectory of those two films. Boxoffice.com is projecting an excellent $78 million three-day start for Oz.

Last week's top film, Jack the Giant Slayer, declined a very sharp 67.3 percent from it's opening day to $2.52 million on Friday. Considering the film saw a solid boost last Saturday, the week-to-week decline is made worse by the fact that the movie didn't exhibit any front-loading. We're projecting a 64 percent second weekend decline to $9.8 million. By comparison, last year's John Carter slipped 55 percent in its sophomore frame. There's no doubt that Oz stole away Jack's family audiences, though.

21 and Over pulled another $1.64 million yesterday, down 51 percent from it's opening day last week. The R-rated comedy is on pace for a $4.7 million second frame.

Meanwhile, The Last Exorcism Part II slipped nearly 67 percent from last Friday to $1.075 million yesterday. Boxoffice.com is projecting a $2.9 million weekend.

Lastly, Dead Man Down opened to $1.83 million yesterday. The thriller is on pace for a $5.5 million three-day debut.
