$51.0 Million for 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' in Four Days

Paramount's G.I. Joe: Retaliation led the way this weekend with $40.50 million. The long delayed 3D action sequel opened in line with pre-release expectations and generated the second largest Easter weekend debut of all-time (behind only the $61.24 million start of 2010's Clash of the Titans). Since its debut on Thursday, G.I. Joe: Retaliation has grossed a solid $51.01 million through four days of release. However, G.I. Joe: Retaliation is running 16.5 percent behind the $61.12 million four-day start (Friday through Monday) of 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (which didn't have the advantage of higher priced 3D admissions). It should be noted that with a reported production budget of $130 million, Retaliation was significantly less expensive than The Rise of Cobra was. With an A- CinemaScore rating, it is also possible that going forward G.I. Joe: Retaliation will display stronger holding power than G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra did.

3D grosses accounted for 45 percent of the film's total grosses this weekend (which includes the 9 percent of grosses that IMAX screenings accounted for). The audience breakdown for G.I. Joe: Retaliation skewed heavily towards male moviegoers (68 percent) and towards moviegoers 25 years and over (59 percent).

G.I. Joe: Retaliation was stronger overseas this weekend, as it grossed $80.3 million from 53 foreign markets. That places the film's global launch at $131.3 million. Key overseas grosses this weekend included $11.0 million in Russia, $6.0 million in Korea, $6.0 million in Mexico, $4.5 million in Germany and $4.2 million in Australia.

The Croods experienced a solid second weekend hold with a second place take of $26.71 million. The first DreamWorks Animation computer animated film to be distributed by Fox fell 39 percent from last weekend. In comparison, 2011's Rio fell 33 percent in its second weekend to gross $26.32 million, while 2010's How to Train Your Dragon fell 34 percent to gross $29.01 million (the second weekends for both films also fell on Easter weekend). The Croods has grossed $88.89 million through ten days of release, leaving it $11.11 million away from becoming the third domestic release of 2013 to reach the $100 million domestic milestone. The Croods is currently running 10 percent stronger than the $80.81 million ten-day start of Rio and a just 3.5 percent softer than the $92.14 million ten-day take of How to Train Your Dragon.

Overseas, The Croods grossed $52.2 million from 59 foreign markets this weekend. That brings the film's overseas total to $140.44 million and current worldwide haul to $229.3 million.

Tyler Perry's Temptation was off to a good start with a third place performance of $21.64 million. The Lionsgate release exceeded expectations this weekend, which had been held in check a bit by the recent performances of Perry's non-Madea films. Temptation was based on one of Perry's pre-existing plays, something that typically helps his films at the box office as well. Temptation opened 8 percent below the $23.45 million start of 2009's I Can Do Bad All By Myself and 8 percent ahead of the $20.08 million Easter weekend start of 2008's Meet the Browns. The film skewed heavily towards female moviegoers (70 percent) and towards moviegoers 25 years and older (79 percent). Tyler Perry's Temptation received an A- rating on CinemaScore, though it is still highly likely that the film will be quite front-loaded towards opening weekend given the past box office history of Perry's films.

The news wasn't anywhere near as good for Open Road's The Host. The adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's post-Twilight novel landed in sixth place with a lackluster $10.60 million. It was especially disappointing that The Host started out 14 percent softer than the $12.37 million debut of 2011's Hanna, a lower-profile release which also starred Saoirse Ronan. The Host opened 37 percent softer than the $16.84 million Easter weekend start of 2011's Water for Elephants. Like Water for Elephants, The Host will hope to hold up better than anticipated going forward, but that will be easier said than done given its B- CinemaScore and the degree of early front-loading it displayed this weekend (the film registered an opening weekend to Friday ratio of 1.99 to 1).

FilmDistrict's Olympus Has Fallen fell two spots and 53 percent to place in fourth with $14.15 million. On the heels of last weekend's stronger than expected start, Olympus Has Fallen clearly took a direct hit from G.I. Joe: Retaliation this weekend. With that said, Olympus Has Fallen continues to exceed expectations with a ten-day start of $54.89 million. Olympus Has Fallen will hope to stabilize going forward, especially with the initial rush-out for G.I. Joe: Retaliation now out of the way.

Oz: The Great and Powerful claimed fifth place with $11.70 million. Disney's 3D fantasy blockbuster was down 46 percent from last weekend, as the film wasn't really able to sustain the momentum it had built up during the midweek. Oz: The Great and Powerful has grossed $198.37 million in 24 days, leaving it just $1.63 million away from reaching the $200 million domestic milestone. With an overseas total of $214.0 million, the current global haul for Oz: The Great and Powerful stands at $412.4 million.

In platform release, The Place Beyond the Pines grossed $279,457 from four locations in New York and Los Angeles. That gave the Focus release starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes a per-location average of $69,864 for the frame. The Place Beyond the Pines is scheduled to expand into an additional 13 markets this coming Friday.
