Sony's This Is the End got off to a great start with $7.816 million in the bank for its opening day. That figure includes $2.2 million from Tuesday night's preview shows. The first-day take compares very well to 2008's Tropic Thunder which opened with $6.5 million on Wednesday, although it trails the $12.1 million first day of Pineapple Express. Nevertheless, those films opened in late summer (August) and it's conceivable that This Is the End may be less front-loaded than Pineapple. Strong reviews and early word of mouth are expected to drive This Is the End well beyond opening day.

Now You See Me eclipsed The Purge to take second place on Wednesday with $1.98 million--down 19 percent from Tuesday and 33.5 percent from last Wednesday. The magician flick has tallied $67.75 million through 13 days of release, giving it a 35 percent lead on 2008's 21.

The Purge was one of several films to take a sizable hit due to the new release on Wednesday. Universal's hit thriller declined 29 percent from Tuesday for a $1.902 million gross yesterday, meanwhile falling into third place. The film's domestic cume through six days is now an impressive $41.96 million--56.5 percent ahead of The Strangers through the same point.

Fast & Furious 6 grabbed another $1.62 million yesterday, down 22 percent from Tuesday. The Universal sequel's first 20 days have collected $208.65 million at the domestic box office. That's a 19.7 percent lead on Fast Five's total through the same point in its release. Fast 6 is on target to surpass that film's final domestic gross of $209.8 million by the end of the week.

Fox reports a $1.4 million Wednesday take for The Internship, off an expected 23 percent from Tuesday. Direct competition for comedy audiences with This Is the End is proving to put the Google-centric comedy at another disadvantage. The film's six-day start of $22.57 million is still in line with expectations, but there appears to be no sign of recovery for the generally disappointing performance thus far.
