Sony reports that The Smurfs 2 grabbed $5.2 million in its Wednesday debut. That represents a sharp 60 percent decline from its predecessor's opening day, however, it opened on a Friday. The figure is also off more than 5 percent from Turbo's opening Wednesday two weeks ago. The animated sequel is targeting a somewhat disappointing $20 million 3-day weekend at this point.

Fox's The Wolverine bagged another $4.34 million on Wednesday, down 27 percent from Tuesday. With $69 million in the bank after 6 days, the film is running 1.2 percent behind X-Men: First Class and 30.4 percent behind X-Men Origins: Wolverine. BoxOffice is forecasting a 60 percent drop this weekend to $21.5 million.

The Conjuring continues to post strong daily holds as it declined just 45 percent from last Wednesday to $2.49 million yesterday. The horror sensation has tallied $92.4 million since opening 13 days ago and is expected to cross the $100 million threshold this weekend.

Despicable Me 2 took a modest 22 percent day-to-day hit with The Smurfs 2 targeting families and kids in its opening. Despicable took in $2.14 million on Wednesday, which is down just 36.3 percent from the same day last week. The blockbuster flick has amassed $314 million thus far and will overtake Shrek the Third this weekend to become the third highest grossing animated sequel ever.

Fox reports a large 33 percent day-to-day drop for Turbo as it pulled in $1.45 million on Wednesday. Clearly hit more strongly by the new competition from Smurfs 2, the original DreamWorks property increased its domestic total to $61.6 million. With Disney's Planes opening next week, more significant drops for Turbo could be in store.

TWC's Fruitvale Station added $459,493 to its haul thus far, bumping its total to $7.8 million. Meanwhile, The Way, Way Back also continues to perform well with another $431,483 in the bank yesterday. Its domestic total stands at $10.4 million.
