‘Despicable Me 3’ Opens w/ $9.8M in 5 Markets Overseas

Ahead of its domestic debut later this summer, Universal’s Despicable Me 3 premiered in five overseas markets this weekend, taking in $9.8 million.

The animated comedy sequel’s highest territory was $4.5 million in Australia, followed by $1.9 million in the Philippines, $1.5 million in Singapore, $1.1 million in Malaysia, and $859 thousand in Thailand. Those markets were selected to debut this past weekend to coincide with local school holidays.

The film opens domestically on June 30, when it is also scheduled to open in 46 other overseas markets, comprising most of its global rollout. However, China will open on July 7.

The movie hopes to replicate the progressively improving overseas and global grosses of previous installments. Despicable Me earned $291.6 million overseas and $543.1 million globally, Despicable Me 2 improved both numbers with $602.7 million overseas and $970.8 million globally, and spinoff Minions improved yet again with $823.4 million overseas and $1.159 billion globally.
