Disney’s ‘Finding Dory’ Surpasses $900M Globally

Disney’s Finding Dory exceeded $900 million globally on Monday, as it closes in on the billion-dollar mark.

Its $476.9 million to date domestically makes it the highest-grossing film of the year so far by about $69 million and counting, with the film still adding to its box office total with $1.3 million this past weekend, its ninth in release. Its overseas gross of $423.5 million is the sixth-highest of the year so far, but that’s without having yet opened in several major markets including Germany and Italy.

The animated sequel to the beloved 2003 Pixar classic Finding Nemo stars the voices of Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks. Dory has now beaten Nemo‘s original $871 million total, and is closing in on Nemo‘s $936 million lifetime gross if counting the film’s brief 2012 theatrical re-release in 3-D.

Globally, Finding Dory is the fourth highest grossing worldwide this year to date. All three films ahead of it so far are fellow Disney releases: Captain America: Civil War with $1.15 billion, Zootopia with $1.02 billion, and The Jungle Book with $949 million. With this December’s upcoming Disney release Rogue One: A Star Wars Story expected to do tremendous business worldwide, it is conceivable that Disney could end the year with all five of the highest grossing releases globally. (Disney also had the highest grossing worldwide film of last year with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.)
