aug23.pngThis weekend's pack of new releases includes The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, The World's End, and You're Next.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

PROS:

- Supernatural romances aimed at teenagers became a hot commodity thanks to the Twilight franchise.
- The book series has sold fairly well.
- Twitter activity began picking up this week as release approached.

CONS:

- The commercial failures of Beautiful Creatures and The Host earlier this year indicate the genre is dying out.
- The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is already overshadowing the film's buzz despite being three months away.
- Flixster activity is slow.

The World's End

PROS:

- Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright have established a devoted fan base thanks largely to their first two movies in the "Cornetto Trilogy", Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
- Since those films released, Simon Pegg has become an even more recognizable face thanks to his turns in the Star Trek and Mission: Impossible franchises.
- Positive reviews and high Flixster user anticipation indicate the trio's usual audience should turn out this weekend.

CONS:

- Although they've been financially successful and carry devoted fans, Pegg's and Frost's movies haven't turned into widely appealing films at the box office.
- Twitter and Facebook activity are sluggish, similar to where Paul stood back in 2011.
- Opening at the end of a busy summer market limits any potential to break out.

You're Next

PROS:

- The films' reviews are surprisingly strong for the horror genre.
- Twitter activity has begun picking up.
- Could the success of The Purge and The Conjuring rub off on the film?

CONS:

- Facebook activity has been particularly weak.
- Opening at the end of a busy summer market limits any potential to break out, especially with Insidious Chapter 2 around the corner next month.
- The limited marketing campaign has likely limited general awareness.
