Weekend Forecast: 'The LEGO Movie', 'The Monuments Men', & 'Vampire Academy'

The LEGO Movie

PROS:

- The built-in brand appeal spans across multiple generations of audiences.
- Marketing has put great emphasis on the film's many pop culture references.
- Early reviews are glowing as the film stands at 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes as of Wednesday afternoon.
- Twitter and Flixster activity are noticeably strong, both far ahead of where Hotel Transylvania stood at the same point.

CONS:

- Will the streaky success of Frozen dampen upfront demand for LEGO?
- Facebook activity is more modest.
- Next weekend's holiday frame could create some backloading for the film.

The Monuments Men

PROS:

- George Clooney leads an ensemble cast that should appeal strongly to adults.
- Twitter and Flixster activity have been encouraging.

CONS:

- Reviews aren't looking good, and the film's target audience is one that will read them.
- The breakout of several adult-leaning films in January has likely softened demand for this.
- Wartime films are hit and miss at the box office.

Vampire Academy

PROS:

- Twitter and Flixster buzz aren't too shabby.
- Teenage girls not interested in LEGO could turn out for this.

CONS:

- Who is the film really being marketed toward?
- The vampire/gothic craze seems to be burning out, as evidenced by last year's Beautiful Creatures and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
