'Hansel and Gretel' opens at #1 in Brazil
on January 27, 2013
The Paramount fairy tale actioner Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters made its international debut this weekend in 19 countries and opened at #1 in every territory besides Argentina. It's highest opening was Brazil, in which the Jeremy Renner flick made $4.5 million from 366 theaters, 616% above Red Riding Hood, 154% above Underworld: Awakening, 93% above Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Killer, and 56% above Snow White and the Huntsman. Part of Hansel's success could be spill-over from Renner's starring role in The Avengers, which made an astounding $63.9 million in Brazil alone. Also debuting strong in Brazil is the Steven Spielberg historical picture Lincoln, which earned $1 million in just 151 theaters, enough to rank it #3 on the weekend's chart.
