'Evil Dead' Strong With Reported $11.9 Million on Friday; 'Jurassic Park 3D' Pulls Modest $7 Million
on April 05, 2013
Saturday Update: Sony reports that Evil Dead grabbed a strong $11.9 million on Friday, likely including $1.8 million from Thursday night 10pm and midnight shows. With no 3D price boost, that compares well with Texas Chainsaw 3D's $10.23 million and Mama's $10.1 million opening days. We're currently projecting a $27.5 million weekend based on the reported figure.
Universal reports a $7 million Friday for Jurassic Park 3D, noticeably less than The Phantom Menace 3D's $8.6 million first day last year. BoxOffice projects an $18.5 million weekend.
Previously: Sony reports that Evil Dead was able to take in $1.8 million from 10 p.m./midnight shows. That puts the horror flick in the same league as The Devil Inside ($2 million from preview shows) and Saw 3D ($1.7 million from previews). The Devil Inside opened to $33.7 million in January 2012, while Saw 3D posted a $24.2 million debut in October 2010.
Meanwhile, Jurassic Park 3D took in $475K. That's a far cry from the $1.3 million that Star Wars: The Phantom Menace 3D made from midnight shows.
