BRAZIL: 'Thor: The Dark World' Impresses with $6.6M Bow

Thor: The Dark World conquered the Brazilian box office with a $6.6 million bow. The superhero sequel outperformed the $5.4 million debut of the original. The $6,139 per-screen average was enough to take the weekend as well, as Thor began its return to the overseas market with a $109.4 million head start ahead of its North American debut.
Domestic Romantic-Comedy Meu Passado Me Condena posted a particularly strong hold in its second frame, dropping a mere 10% for a $2.1 million take. The Brazilian film has grossed $5.8 million over its two weeks in release.
Gravity relinquished 59% of its screens in its fourth weekend and was still able to place in the top five. The sci-fi film grossed $466K to pass the $7 million mark in the territory. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs continues to outgross its predecessor; the animated sequel finished the weekend with a $12.7 million cume, well above the original film’s $7.5 million total. The Counselor crossed the $1 million mark in its second weekend in Brazil.
Two other U.S. films saw limited releases in Brazil over the weekend. Lee Daniels’ The Butler opened in 42 screens for a $113K take and The Purge took a $91K bow from 54 screens.
