SUNDAY: Frozen passed the $800 million global mark this weekend after taking another $20.2 million from 52 territories. Frozen is the tenth Disney release to hit the $800 million global milestone and is currently reporting a $462.5 million overseas total and $810.3 million global cume.
The animated film took a record debut from South Korea last weekend, where it registered the biggest opening for a Disney or Pixar film of all time. Second weekend grosses in South Korea jumped 20% to bring its local cume up to a strong $22.6 million after only ten days in release. Frozen is now the highest grossing animated release of all time in South Korea for Disney. Frozen is also the biggest animated release of all time for the studio in Denmark, where the film has grossed a total of $6.6 million.
The top markets for Frozen include the United Kingdom ($57.7M), Germany ($45M), France ($41.2M), Russia ($32.9M), Australia ($27.9M), Italy ($26.6M), Mexico ($24.5M), South Korea ($22.6M), and Spain ($20.3M).
Frozen has an outside shot at reaching the $1 billion mark if it can pull in big audiences in China on February 5 and Japan on March 15.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit grossed $14.3 million from 8,169 venues in 41 territories this weekend. The strong hold brings its overseas total to $46.5 million. The film has grossed a total of $76.6 million worldwide.
The spy film enjoyed a $2.1 million bow from 404 locations in the United Kingdom, its best performing opener among 12 new markets this weekend. China posted the strongest hold for the film with a $5.5 million tally from 3,850 theaters, taking the local cume up to $20.9 million. Other top markets for Jack Ryan include Australia ($3.6M) and Russia ($3.5M).
The Wolf of Wall Street is still coming up with big numbers in three key European territories where the film is being distributed by Universal. The film held on to the top spot in Germany, the United Kingdom, and Spain for the second consecutive weekend.
Germany posted a $5.7 million hold from 597 dates to reach an 11-day cume of $14.3 million. The U.K. took $5.5 million from 500 dates to reach a 10-day total of $17.4 million. Spain held up nicely with a $3.2 million take from 287 dates, bringing its local cume up to $8.2 million.
I, Frankenstein flopped in North America with an $8.3 million opening weekend but could find new life overseas. The film roared through the Russian box office in its day-and-date debut, finishing the weekend in first place with a $6.4 million take from 1,829 screens. The Russian debut compares to about 75% of the film's opening tally in North America.
12 Years a Slave continued to impress in the United Kingdom after a $3.3 million gross from 485 screens put the film in second place behind The Wolf of Wall Street. The drama has grossed a total of $17.1 million over three frames in the United Kingdom. 12 Years a Slave took a #1 debut in France where it earned $2.3 million from 210 screens. 12 Years a Slave has grossed a total of $35 million from 29 markets overseas and is currently reporting a $78.5 million global cume.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug added $5.6 million to its overseas tally, bringing its running total outside of North America to $595 million. The film is expected to cross the $600 million overseas mark by the end of the week. Top markers for Smaug include Germany ($85.8M), the United Kingdom ($69.4M), France ($50.3M), Russia ($44.9M), and Australia ($32.6m). The global total for the latest Hobbit film is $847.3 million.
A $5 million weekend in China pushed Despicable Me 2 to a 17-day $43.2 million total in the market. The new total places Despicable Me 2 as the fourth highest grossing animated film of all time in China. The Minions are expected to cross the $600 million overseas mark in the coming days after finishing the weekend with a $596.7 million overseas total. The film's global cume is $964.7 million, making it the third highest grossing animated film of all time behind Toy Story 3 ($1.1B) and The Lion King ($987.8M).
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones broke the $40 million mark overseas after grossing $4.5 million from 41 territories in its fourth frame outside of North America. Australia led the weekend with a $1.4 million bow from 204 cinemas, a 117% improvement over the opening of The Devil Inside in the same market. The horror film has grossed a total of $82.5 million worldwide.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty collected $4.4 million from 3,386 screens in 53 markets this weekend. The film has now grossed a total of $113 million overseas, a big help to its dwindling North American cume of $56.3 million. The global total for the Ben Stiller film is currently $169.4 million. Top markets for the film include Australia ($11.7M), the U.K. ($10.9M), Russia ($10.7M), France ($7.8M), Spain ($7.6M), and Germany ($7M). Walter Mitty will hope to boost its numbers with a March 21 release in Japan.
Walking with Dinosaurs earned $4.2 million from 2,986 screens across 27 markets this weekend, bringing its overseas total to $79 million. The animated film has grossed $113.4 million worldwide. Walking with Dinosaurs opened in third place in Italy this weekend with $1.8 million from 566 screens.
The Book Thief earned $3.8 million from 2,129 screens in 23 markets this weekend. The film has grossed a total of $17 million overseas and $37.3 million worldwide. The Book Thief will open in eight new markets next weekend, including Brazil.
47 Ronin added $2.6 million from 2,600 dates in 44 territories to take its overseas total to $83.7 million. The action film took a #2 debut in Chile with $233k from 95 dates. 47 Ronin has only been a notable hit in Russia, where it has already grossed $25.8 million after 25 days in release. 47 Ronin has grossed a total of $121.7 million globally.
Devil's Due reached a $5.8 million overseas cume after taking $2.2 million from 830 screens in 15 markets during its second weekend. The horror film opened in Brazil ($438k, 167 screens), the Netherlands ($340k, 42 screens), and the United Arab Emirates ($185k, 25 screens). Devil's Due has grossed a total of $18.7 million worldwide. The film will expand to 6 new markets next weekend, including Mexico and Russia.
Bad Grandpa enjoyed a $2.1 million opening from 450 venues in Russia, on par with the premiere of Jackass 3D in the market. The Academy Award nominated comedy took $2.2 million from 8 territories over the weekend to bring its overseas total to $47 million. Bad Grandpa has grossed a total of $149 million worldwide.
The Counselor posted a $959k hold from 402 screens in its second weekend in Italy. The thriller has earned a total of $3.9 million in the market and is reporting a $53.9 million overseas cume. The Counselor has grossed $70.3 million worldwide.
Ride Along opened in five territories this weekend for a $750k overseas roll-out from 106 dates. The film posted the biggest opening weekend for a live action comedy in Trinidad after taking #1 at the box office with $105k from 9 dates. The film also opened in Romania, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates. Universal will release Ride Along in seven more territories, including a February 28 release in the United Kingdom.
Last Vegas opened in eighth place in Italy this weekend with a $557k premiere from 220 dates. The film took a #5 debut from New Zealand with $170k at 70 dates.
