Lunar New Year Holiday Off to a Record-Setting Start

The Chinese box office registered a record-setting $41 million during the first day of the Lunar New Year holiday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The strong haul is led by strong performances from domestic new releases, including a $64.3 million running total for The Monkey King, a 3D adaptation of the ever popular Journey to the West stories. Reality TV adaptation Dad, Where are We Going? has now grossed over $50 million after recording a second place finish over the weekend with a $34 million haul.
Other top domestic earners during the holiday include the crime/comedy caper The Man from Macau ($15.5M) and romantic comedy Ace in the Hole ($4.3M).
