Fox's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes grossed $5.83 million on Thursday to lead the daily box office for a seventh consecutive day. In the process, the critically acclaimed 3D sci-fi action sequel surpassed the $100 million domestic mark yesterday. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes did drop 13 percent form Wednesday, but it should be noted that daily percentage declines in general were significant for wide releases on Thursday. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes easily led the weekly box office with a strong seven-day start of $102.95 million. That is a bit ahead of expectations and places the film an impressive 33 percent ahead of the $77.38 million seven-day take of 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Transformers: Age of Extinction held steady in second with $1.76 million. The fourth installment of Paramount's blockbuster sci-fi action franchise was down 10 percent form Wednesday, which represented the day's best daily percentage hold among wide releases. However, the film was still down 49 percent from last Thursday. Transformers: Age of Extinction placed in second for the week with $24.63 million. That was down 55 percent from the previous frame and brings the films three-week total to $217.16 million.
Warner's Tammy took in $1.30 million to remain in third. The Melissa McCarthy comedy fell 20 percent from Wednesday and 47 percent from last Thursday, as the film clearly took a hit from Sony's Sex Tape entering the marketplace on Thursday evening. Tammy finished in third place this week with $19.20 million. That represented a 41 percent decline from the previous week and brings the film's 16-day total to a very solid $63.65 million.
Family films How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Earth to Echo claimed fourth and fifth place on Thursday with respective daily grosses of $0.897 million and $0.816 million. Both films were down 24 percent from Wednesday. Fox's How to Train Your Dragon 2 placed in fourth for the week with $10.67 million, while Relativity's Earth to Echo took sixth place with $9.62 million. Respective total grosses stand at $156.87 million for How to Train Your Dragon 2 in 35 days and at $28.72 million for Earth to Echo in 16 days.
