Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters opened in first place in Mexico, gorssing $2.6 million from 1,288 screens. The Percy Jackson sequel presented an improvement over the original's $1.6 million debut in 2010.
Mexico is a friendly market for family films and animated releases have fared well throughout the summer. The Smurfs 2 scored a $1.9 million hold from its second weekend in a market-leading 1,533 screens. The Smurfs sequel has grossed a total of $8.3 million in Mexico. Turbo might be struggling worldwide, but it has already earned a respectable $9.7 million in Mexico. Despicable Me 2 continues to be a success story in Mexico after reaching a $46.6 million cume in its fifth weekend.
Pain and Gain underwhelmed in its debut, opening in sixth place after grossing slightly over $500k across 294 screens. The Big Wedding also saw a limited debut in Mexico but walked away with a competitive $2,158 average across 203 locations.

Anime auteur Hayao Mizayaki's The Wind Rises continues to be a top earner in Japan. The anime film held on for a fantastic $5.3 million hold in its fourth frame, a 6% drop from the previous weekend. The Wind Rises has now grossed an astounding $56.9 million.
Mizayaki's film overshadowed the Japanese premiere of World War Z. The Brad Pitt zombie flick opened to $3.4 million across 644 screens. World War Z performed better than Pacific Rim in its opening frame. The Guillermo del Toro popcorn flick opened in the market to an underwhelming $3.1 million.
Disney's The Lone Ranger fell to the bottom half of the table in its second weekend, posting a $1.9 million gross to take its total to $9.6 million. Disney has had more success in Japan with Monsters University. Japan is the top overseas market for the Pixar prequel, where it has already grossed a very strong $67.9 million.

The Lone Ranger can at least claim a #1 opening in Germany in it attempts to salvage its global box office numbers. The action-adventure entry from Disney opened in 657 locations to a $3.6 million weekend, winning the per-screen category along the way with a $5,545 average.
The Smurfs 2 continued dominating the screen count in the country and brought in another $3 million in its second weekend. That's only a 1% drop for Sony's animated sequel, which has already grossed a total of $8.7 million. As far as animated sequel success goes, however, there is no better earner in the market than Despicable Me 2. The minions added $1.8 million over their sixth weekend in release, reaching a $30.3 million cume. That figure is more than twice the total of Monsters University; the Pixar prequel fell out of the top ten this weekend and is currently posting a $13 million total.
The Wolverine finished in fourth place with a $1.4 million take. The superhero spin-off has earned a total of $9.7 million in Germany. Grown Ups 2 celebrated its fourth weekend in Germany with a sturdy $1.2 million take. The comedy sequel has now grossed $10.1 million. This is the End opened to a $1 million take in a moderate 311 screens, scoring a competitive $3,321 per-screen average.

Now You See Me continues its magical run in France, earning $4.1 million in its second weekend after a spectacular hold that saw its performance drop a mere 35% from its debut. Now You See Me has grossed $12.6 million in France.
The Lone Ranger opened in second place with $3.7 million. It is the same debut posted by Johnny Depp's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which went on to gross a respectable $29.3 million in 2005. The weekend's other Hollywood premiere came from a limited roll-out by The Purge. The Ethan Hawke thriller took in $1.1 million from 192 screens, notching the second biggest per-screen average in the market with a $6,929 tally.
The Smurfs 2 rounded out a competitive top three, adding $3.4 million over its second weekend to raise its cumulative total to $8.8 million. The Wolverine fell short of a $2 million weekend in its third frame but was still able to break through the $15 million mark. Despicable Me 2 finished its seventh weekend in France with a $1.5 million take and $36.3 million cume. The Minions have more than doubled the take of Monsters University; the Pixar prequel has grossed $15.5 million over 5 weeks in release.

UPI's success has been propelled by hits such as Les Misérables, ($293 million) Fast & Furious 6 ($544.4 million) and Despicable Me 2 ($410 million) and also by the solid performance of films like Mama ($75.9 million) and Oblivion ($197.1 million). UPI's previous record was set in 2012 when the studio grossed $1.794 billion for the year. 2013 international highlights include:
· Universal Pictures films dominated the worldwide box office on six weekends in 2013 including Oblivion's No. 1 opening, Fast 6 which was No. 1 twice and Despicable Me 2 which was No. 1 worldwide for three weeks.
· Fast & Furious 6 opened No. 1 in 65 territories and was Universal's biggest opening of all-time in 41 of those markets. The film also provided the studio with its highest opening weekend ever at the international box office. Fast 6 is the second highest-grossing film of 2013 and Universal's second highest-grossing film of all-time behind Jurassic Park.
· Despicable Me 2 is the highest-grossing animated film of the year. It opened No. 1 in 41 territories and is Universal's highest grossing film of all time in 15 of those territories.
· Les Misérables is the second highest-grossing musical overseas and worldwide behind Universal's Mamma Mia!
· Oblivion opened in the No. 1 spot in 49 territories and was Tom Cruise's biggest opening of all-time in Russia and Indonesia.
· Mama, a film driven by Universal Pictures International Production group (UPIP) had tremendous success in Latin territories including holding the No. 1 spot in Spain for an impressive three-week period.
· UPI has also had success with its locally-produced productions, including Argentina's Foosball which has grossed $11.2 million and held the No. 1 position for three weeks in that territory.
