KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Regal Entertainment Group (NYSE: RGC), a leading motion picture exhibitor owning and operating the largest theatre circuit in the United States, today announces that Regal will host midnight shows of the Syfy Channel's film "Sharknado" on August 2 at approximately 200 cinemas across the country.
"‘Sharknado' has become a force of nature in its own right. At its peak, #sharknado registered about 5,000 tweets per minute, and accumulated more than 600,000 social media mentions while taking the internet by storm. Tickets for the midnight shows are available at the box office, online and through the Regal App.

Despicable Me 2 is gearing up to be one of the biggest hits of the year in Mexico. The animated sequel grossed $3.7 million over the weekend, reaching a $39 million total. The Minions' weekend victory was enough to lift Despicable Me 2 over Monsters University's cume. The Pixar prequel also ranks as one of the biggest films of 2013 in Mexico with a $36.8 million total over five weeks. It only took Despicable Me 2 three weeks to overtake the Pixar release.
Turbo proved yet again that Mexican audiences are loyal to animated movies. The film narrowly lost out to Despicable Me 2 for the top spot after a $3.6 million opening weekend. The Lone Ranger took a back seat to the animated duo, placing third in its Mexican premiere with $3.5 million. Pacific Rim fell 54% from its opening weekend but still managed to rake in a healthy $2.5 million hold. Guillermo del Toro's latest spectacle has grossed $11.5 million in the Mexican director's home country.

Monsters University still rules in the U.K. The Pixar prequel posted a strong hold, only a 19% drop from its opening weekend, on its way to earning $4.2 million over the weekend and reaching a $13.1 million cume. Monsters U beat out director Edgar Wright's reunion with stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in The World's End. The trio has previously collaborated in cult comedy hits like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Their fan-following accounted for a $3.2 million opening weekend across 530 theaters.
Despicable Me 2 hit a major milestone by reaching a $45.7 million total over the weekend, enough to surpass the $45.6 million that Man of Steel has grossed over six weeks. It only took the Minions four weeks to get ahead of the Superman reboot. Despicable Me 2 is showing no signs of slowing down after posting a $2.8 million weekend, only a 19% fall from last week's performance.
Pacific Rim tumbled down to fourth place in its second week of release, adding $2 million to take its total to $7.8 million. Guillermo del Toro's film won't pull in the blockbuster numbers it needs to overcome a slow run in North America. Pacific Rim, however, is having a much easier time at the box office than The Internship. The Fox comedy failed to find a significant audience in the United Kingdom, disappointing with a $4.3 million tally over three weeks.

Germany loves the Minions. Despicable Me 2 added $2.9 million over its third weekend to reach an $18.2 million cume, leading a weekend that included four new releases breaking into the top ten. Grown Ups 2 came in second place with a $2.3 million debut. The comedy sequel won a head-to-head battle against Pacific Rim. Guillermo del Toro's high-concept project opened in third place with $1.9 million.
No other film broke the million-dollar mark outside of the top three. World War Z came closest to reach the milestone in its fourth weekend but fell short with a $740k tally that raised its German total to $16.1 million. Now You See Me fell flat in Germany, falling to fifth place in its second weekend after a 50% drop from its opening frame. The magic heist film has grossed a total of $2.3 million to date. The Heat has also disappointed in the market, earning a $3.5 million total in an otherwise comedy-friendly territory.

The Heat is still on in Australia. The Melissa McCarthy/Sandra Bullock comedy led the box office in its second weekend by taking in a total of $2.5 million dollars, brining its cume in Oz to $7.5 million. It was only a 27% drop from The Heat's opening weekend, enough to relegate the openings of This is the End and The Conjuring down to second and third place, respectively. Screen count had a lot to do with the result in the top three. The Heat's 341 locations allowed the female-driven comedy to pull ahead of the new releases. This is the End played in 233 screens for a $2.2 million opening weekend and a $9,683 per-screen average that ranks above The Heat's $7,529 average. The Conjuring came in third with a $1.6 million opening but posted the weekend's top average with a $12,133 count from only 135 screens.
Pacific Rim fell 55% from its opening weekend to gross $1.5 million in its second frame. The high-concept film has earned a total of $5.2 million in Australia -not exactly a flop, but nowhere near a blockbuster success. The film will likely end its run behind Disney's The Lone Ranger. The Johnny Depp vehicle has grossed $8.2 million in three weeks, including a million-dollar performance over the weekend.
The rest of the chart is populated by certified hits. Despicable Me 2 added another $1.5 million in its fifth weekend to reach a $29.9 million total. Man of Steel earned $1 million in its fourth frame to break the $20 million mark. World War Z closed out its fifth week in Australia with anequally impressive $20.8 million.
