Wednesday Morning Update: The Maze Runner continued to lead the pack on Tuesday despite dropping 12% to 12,375 tweets. Facebook on the other hand had a very hefty increase of 25k+ to 837k likes. By comparison, The Hunger Games had 37,820 tweets and 3,054,892 likes its Tuesday before release, Divergent had 75,277 tweets and 1,060,953 likes, while The Giver had 6,777 tweets and 374,863 likes. While its Twitter numbers are nothing extraordinary its Facebook tallies are hard to ignore and really point to a strong beginning.
A Walk Among The Tombstones had a strong increase on Tuesday of 230% to 2,366 tweets while Facebook also somewhat less encouraging with a sub 1% rise to 278,342 likes. By comparison, Non-Stop had 3,895 tweets and 384,224 likes its Tuesday before release, while Prisoners had 471 tweets and 98,890 likes. The film is lagging notably to recent Neeson thrillers and while I have it a ways above Prisoners its important to note that because of the latter's very common name a more restrictive search string had to be employed to weed out unrelated tweets and served as a limiter to its numbers (in fact Non-Stop also employed quite a restrictive string and still handily beat out Tombstones too). I see a decent opening here of low to mid double figures but nothing approaching $20 million given these signs.
This Is Where I Leave You had a 7% fall to 1,727 tweets on Tuesday, down from 1,857 tweets on Monday, while Facebook grew to 206,409 likes, up from 203,857 likes the day before. By comparison, The Other Woman had 9,149 tweets and 147,093 likes its Tuesday before release, while The Internship had 4,971 tweets and 247,638 likes. The dwindling tweet totals are somewhat of a worry as is the lag between its Facebook likes and director Shawn Levy's last film The Internship. Double digits still look to be assured but as of right now I'd say it looks to be bringing up the rear amongst the new openers once the weekend dollars are tallied.

Sony's No Good Deed took in $1.82 million on Tuesday to lead the daily box office for a fifth consecutive day. The low-budget thriller from Screen Gems starring Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson increased 13 percent over Monday. That represented one of the day's poorer daily holds among wide releases on Tuesday. In the bigger picture, No Good Deed continues to outpace expectations with a healthy five-day start of $27.68 million. That places the film 7 percent ahead of the $25.96 million five-day take of 2009's I Can Do Bad All By Myself.
Guardians of the Galaxy held steady in second place with $0.779 million. The blockbuster sci-fi superhero adaptation from Disney and Marvel was up 35 percent over Monday and down a very slim 17 percent from last Tuesday. Daily percentage increases over Monday were strong in general on Tuesday. Guardians of the Galaxy is the highest grossing release of 2014 thus far domestically with $307.34 million through 47 days.
Dolphin Tale 2 grossed $0.703 million to remain in third place. Like Guardians of the Galaxy, the family film sequel from Warner Bros. also increased 35 percent over Monday. Dolphin Tale 2 has grossed $17.10 million in five days. That is on the lower end of pre-release expectations and places the film 18 percent behind the $20.78 million five-day start of 2011's Dolphin Tale.
Fox Searchlight's The Drop stayed in fourth place with $0.492 million. The crime drama starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and the late James Gandolfini was up 28 percent over Monday's performance. The Drop has grossed $4.98 million in four days, which represents a very solid start given that the film is only playing in 809 locations.
Let's Be Cops rounded out the day's unchanged top five with $0.457 million. Fox's low-budget action comedy increased 31 percent over Monday and was down only 21 percent from last Tuesday. Thanks in part to continued strong holding power; Let's Be Cops has grossed $73.86 million through 35 days of release.

Sony's No Good Deed took in $1.61 million on Monday to lead the daily box office for a fourth consecutive day. The low-budget thriller starring Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson fell 71 percent from Sunday's performance. No Good Deed continues to outpace expectations with a healthy four-day start of $25.86 million. That places the film 4.5 percent ahead of the $24.74 million four-day take of 2009's I Can Do Bad All By Myself.
Guardians of the Galaxy placed in second with $0.579 million. The blockbuster sci-fi superhero adaptation from Disney and Marvel was down 72 percent from Sunday and down a slim 20 percent from last Monday. Guardians of the Galaxy continues to pad its lead as the highest grossing domestic release of 2014 thus far and has now grossed a massive $306.57 million through 46 days of release.
Dolphin Tale 2 claimed third place with $0.522 million. The family film sequel from Warner Bros. fell a very sharp 87 percent from Sunday, which is a sure sign of just how heavily the film is skewing towards family audiences. Dolphin Tale 2 has grossed $16.39 million in four days. That is on the lower end of expectations and places the film 18 percent behind the $19.89 million four-day start of 2011's Dolphin Tale.

Tuesday Morning Update: The Maze Runner continued to impress via its social media channels on Monday as it raked in 14,059 tweets and 811,405 likes. The film is based on the best selling novel of the same name by James Dashner and hopes to successfully make the jump from print to big screen. While not on the same level in terms of book sales as more illustrious young adult adaptations like The Hunger Games and Divergent it has truly generated quite a splash on social media which is heartening to see. Couple that with its largely positive reviews so far and you have a recipe for success. By comparison, The Hunger Games had 34,476 tweets and 2,993,535 likes its Monday before release, Divergent had 54,315 tweets and 1,045,600 likes, while just last month The Giver had 7,627 tweets and ~370,000 likes. This looks to be the clear favourite to walk away with the weekend crown given its competitors, something of a rare feat for the young adult genre which has seen so very many failures over the last five years compared to victories. $20 million looks to be a lock with $30 million a distinct possibility.
This Is Where I Leave You had 1,857 tweets on Monday, almost triple the 669 tweets it put up on Sunday, while Facebook had a decent 203,857 likes. It should skew to older female audiences looking to get away from the action provided by the other two alternatives on the weekend. By comparison, The Other Woman had 3,262 tweets and 140,313 likes, while The Internship had 3,430 tweets and 231,775 likes. Solid numbers thus far should ensure that it has a shot at teen millions I believe though I don’t see it approaching anywhere close to Maze Runner for top spot unless it really steps on the gas over the next couple days (seems unlikely given its pattern over the last couple weeks).
A Walk Among The Tombstones brought up the rear amongst new openers with just 715 tweets on Monday, up 67% from Sunday’s 427. Facebook had a very strong 277,552 likes. The film is aiming to provide a counter-programming alternative to older audiences who are not drawn to The Maze Runner. Liam Neeson has proven to be a very bankable star in this type of action/thriller, a genre reinvigorated by his Taken back in 2009. Since that time he has enjoyed the most financially successful patch in his illustrious career. By comparison, Non-Stop had 2,544 tweets and 377,317 likes its Monday before release, while Prisoners had 394 tweets and 98,306 likes. Unlike recent Neeson hits the social media footprint is pretty light here and while this is not uncommon for films that skew to older adults I have a hard time seeing it challenge for the top spot given its current levels.

LOS ANGELES - September 15, 2014 - Coinciding with the conclusion of the Toronto International Film Festival, Fandango asked film fans which movies they're most looking forward to seeing on the big screen from September through November. More than 1,000 fans were surveyed on Fandango and Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" was the clear winner. "Mockingjay" debuts in theaters on November 21, and advance tickets will be available for purchase on Fandango on October 29.
"It is no surprise that ‘Mockingjay' is the clear winner this fall, as ‘Catching Fire' was such a crowd-pleaser," said Dave Karger, Chief Correspondent for Fandango. "With the ‘Catching Fire' cast and director all returning to the franchise, plus the addition of Julianne Moore, the penultimate ‘Hunger Games' film promises to continue the franchise in electrifying fashion."
