Greg Foster Named CEO Of IMAX Entertainment on July 08, 2013

NEW YORK -- IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX; TSX: IMX) today announced that Greg Foster has been named CEO of IMAX Entertainment and Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp., continuing to report directly to IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. Prior to the appointment, Foster was Chairman and President of IMAX Entertainment.

Since March 2001, Foster has worked to support Gelfond on driving the Company's overall strategy and overseeing all aspects of the Company's global entertainment activities, including creative, production, film distribution, business affairs, marketing, sponsorship, studio relationships and the revolutionary IMAX DMR® process. Foster has successfully re-positioned IMAX's motion picture business and as a result the Company has become one of the most important and successful theatrical distribution platforms for major event films around the globe.

A seasoned Hollywood executive, Foster spent 15 years at MGM/UA where he served in various senior management posts, including Executive Vice President of Production and Senior Vice President of Motion Picture Marketing and Research. Foster is a graduate of Georgetown University.


GLOBAL: 'Monsters University' Hits $400M, 'Lone Ranger' Stalls at $73.2M on July 07, 2013

LoneRangerStill.jpgMonsters University crossed the $400 million mark as The Lone Ranger failed to reach six-digits in a weekend full of contrasts for Disney at the global box office. The animated film became Pixar's 12th consecutive title to reach the $400 million milestone and is only behind Toy Story 3 as the fastest title to accumulate that figure. Monsters University scored the biggest opening weekend of all time in Japan after an $8.3 million take over two days. The film's overseas total is $184.4 million from 39 territories, around 62% of the global market. The top overseas territories for Monsters University are Mexico ($34.7M), Russia ($18.9M), Australia ($14.2M), Argentina ($13.9M), Brazil ($13.2M), Germany ($10.4M), and Spain ($10M). The film will open in France, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Belgium, Hong Kong, and New Zealand next weekend.

The Lone Ranger is having a hard time overcoming bad reviews as it struggled in its day-and-date release in 24 overseas territories. Taylor Kitsch saw a potentially star-making turn prove costly with the failure of last year's John Carter, and Armie Hammer will be hoping that The Lone Ranger can turn its luck around in order to avoid the same mishap. The Gore Verbinski/Johnny Depp combination that proved so successful for Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise fared poorly in the wild west. The Lone Ranger opened midweek in North America to an underwhelming $48.9 million gross. The film was also released in 24 overseas territories, where it only managed to earn $24.3 million. The overseas roll-out represents about 30% of the market for The Lone Ranger. Top markets for the western include Russia ($6.6 M), Australia ($3.2M), Italy ($1.8M), Argentina ($1.6M), and South Korea ($1.6M). The current global total for The Lone Ranger is $73.2 million. 

Despicable Me 2 continued its strong run in the global box office with a big boost from its North American release. The minions earned $142.1 million in their first frame in North America. The film added 38 new territories over the weekend, claiming the top spot in 36 of them and placing in second place in remaining territories. The overseas cume for Despicable Me 2 currently stands at $151.1 million, bringing it days away from reaching the $300 million worldwide milestone with a $293.2 million global total. Despicable Me 2 is the biggest opening ever for an animated film in Latin America, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa and Vietnam. It also became the biggest opening of all time in South Africa and Venezuela. Top markets for the minions sequel include the U.K. and Ireland ($35.9M), Australia ($20.8M), France ($16.9M), Mexico ($15.8M), Brazil ($6.7M), and Germany $6.2M). Despicable Me 2 will open in Estonia, German-Switzerland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine next weekend.

Man of Steel soared past the $300 million overseas milestone. The Superman reboot has now grossed $315.6 million from 62 markets. The top territories for the superhero film include China ($58M), the United Kingdom ($43.6M), Mexico ($20.8M), France ($16.7M), South Korea ($15.1M), and Russia ($10.6M). Man of Steel has grossed $586.8 million worldwide. 

World War Z crossed the $200 million overseas mark this weekend after earning $45.2 million from 54 territories. Brad Pitt's zombie epic has currently grossed $207.4 million overseas and $366.1 million worldwide. World War Z is the number one film in France after a $7.8 million weekend. Other top markets for the film are Russia ($20.5M), Mexico ($15.7M), Australia ($13.5M), Germany ($12.4M), and Brazil ($8.3M).

Fast & Furious 6 reached an overseas total of $460 million, bringing its worldwide cume just short of $700 million with a $995.4 million global total. The action film opened in Japan this weekend and is expected to finish out its debut frame with $4.3 million, the biggest opening of the Fast franchise in the territory and twice the amount its previous entry grossed in its Japanese premiere. Fast 6 will hope to reach the $500 million overseas milestone after its July 26 premiere in China.

The Heat opened in seven new markets, including Russia and Germany, to take its overseas cume to $6.1 million. The Heat opens in 14 more markets next weekend including Australia, Belgium and Taiwan. The comedy's global cume is $92.4 million.

The Internship opened in the United Kingdom this weekend and added $1.1 million from the release to raise its overseas tally to $20.4 million. The Vince Vaughn/Owen Wilson comedy misfired at the box office and currently stands at $63.1 million worldwide. The Internship opens in five new markets open next weekend, including Denmark, Holland and Turkey.  

Epic took in $1.8 million from its holdover markets to reach a $134.3 million overseas cume. The animated film has grossed $238.3 million worldwide.

Star Trek Into Darkness opened in Spain to $1.3 million, helping to take the sci-fi sequel to a $220.8 million overseas cume. The film's current global total is $443.8 million. Star Trek Into Darkness will be released in Greece next weekend.

GLOBAL: 'Despicable Me 2' Reaches $293.2M on July 05, 2013


Sunday Update: Despicable Me 2 grossed $88 million from 45 territories over the weekend to take its overseas total to $151.1 million. The figure is more than twice of the performance of its predecessor in the same territories over the same period. It is the biggest opening of all time for an animated film in Latin America, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa and Vietnam. The film's global total is just shy of the $300 million mark, currently posting a $293.2 million worldwide total.

Despicable Me 2 posted the biggest opening of all time in South Africa and Venezuela. The film opened in 38 markets this weekend, claiming the top spot in 36 of them and coming in on second place in the remaining markets. 

Friday Update: Despicable Me 2's global take is now up to a staggering $134.5 million. At this pace, there's little doubt that the sequel will shatter its predecessor's $543 million global total.

Universal reports that DM2 opened #1 in 19 of the 22 new markets where it was released and is holding #1 in the seven territories where it already opened including the U.K. and Ireland, France and Australia where it opened #2 three weeks ago and has now moved to #1.

DM2 is breaking records overseas, including the biggest opening day for an animated film in Indonesia and Trinidad and Universal's biggest opening day ever in Hungary.

Thursday Update: Despicable Me 2 is entering the holiday weekend in North America with $100 million in the bank. The animated film opened in North America to $34.3 million on Wednesday. Despicable Me 2 is the 8th highest North America Wednesday opening of all time and the highest Wednesday opener for Universal. 

The film's global total is $100.2 million heading into the weekend. The current $65.9 million overseas gross will see a big boost after the animated movie opens in 38 additional territories over the weekend. 


Canadian Chain Cineplex Offers "Super Ticket" For 'Pacific Rim' on July 04, 2013
