Sony Digital Cinema partners with Eclipse Cinemas on March 25, 2013

Basingstoke, 25th March 2013- Eclipse Cinemas, Bundoran, has today become the first cinema complex in Ireland to be fully converted to Sony 4K. Eclipse Cinemas are an Irish independent cinema group which have had 12 Sony 4K projectors installed across two of its three venues, Bundoran in Co Donegal & Downpatrick in County Down. These will also be equipped with the Sony 3D solution, allowing cinema-goers to enjoy the best possible picture quality and entertainment experience.

The installation also means Eclipse Cinemas now has the ability to offer new services beyond traditional mainstream content, such as comedy, sports, music, theatre, opera, multi-user big screen gaming and cultural events. The organisation already plans to screen live Irish sporting events such as Six Nations Rugby, International Football and Gaelic Games, offering customers an alternative solution to watching it at home that brings a taste of the atmosphere and occasion right inside the cinema.

With Sony's Virtual Print Fee (VPF) programme, the transition to digital is easier and more affordable. Sony helps shoulder the costs for independent cinemas switching to 4K. Sony Digital Cinema works closely with major movie studios and distributors to subsidise the cost of exhibitors' technology transition. Sony's VPF programme dramatically cuts capital investment and eases the cash flow as the audience enjoys the benefits of 4K projection from day one.


GLOBAL: 'The Croods' Opens Day-and-Date with $108 Million on March 24, 2013

croods.pngThe Croods took over the world box office this weekend, posting a strong $108 million global cume as it took over the #1 spot in 44 of the 47 overseas markets it opened. The $63.3 million overseas total came in large part to exceptional openings in Russia ($12.9 million), Mexico ($9.5 million), and the UK ($8.3 million). The DreamWorks film received a day-and-date roll-out from Fox this weekend that included key markets in Europe and Latin America. It will expand to 19 additional markets next weekend.

Oz: The Great and Powerful continues its strong run in the overseas box office despite showing a 53% drop in the global market compared to last weekend. The Disney film grossed $21.7 million in 55 territories over the weekend for an overseas total of $178.8 million. The Disney film now posts larger overseas than domestic numbers. The global total stands at $356.4 million.

A Good Day to Die Hard earned $10.5 million overseas this weekend, largely coming from its Australian premiere ($4 million) and a $4.2 million take in China. The overseas total for the Bruce Willis franchise is $220.2 million, representing the majority of its $286.1 million global gross. 

Jack the Giant Slayer took in $19.3 million from 47 markets this weekend, bringing its overseas total to $60.5 million. Bryan Singer's adventure film opened to tough competition from The Croods in Russia and the UK this weekend, finishing a distant second place in both markets. The film has a global cume of $116.5 million. 

Identity Thief added Russia, UK, South Africa, Spain, and Ukraine but only saw its overseas total grow to $8.2 million in 23 territories. A packed release calendar in Russia and the UK this weekend didn't help the American comedy, grossing $2 million and $1.2 million in those markets respectively. The film is slated to open in Austria, Belgium, Germany, and German-Switzerland next weekend.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters grossed $1.4 million on its fourth weekend in Germany. It represented nearly half of the film's $3.5 million weekend in 35 territories this weekend. The overseas cume is $156.8 million and the global cume is $211.5 million. 

Mama added seven more territories and saw its overseas total grow to $51.8 million in 35 territories. The global total is now $123.1 million.

Les Miserables reached an overseas total of $284.3 million. The musical's global total is $433 million.

Anna Karenina reached an overseas total of $52.4 million in 22 territories. The film's global total is $65.2 million.

This is 40 reached an overseas total of $18.5 million. The global total is $86 million. 

Ted posted an overseas total of $329.6 million. The global total stands at $548.4 million.

Lincoln is still adding to its numbers in South Korea and Australia. The Steven Spielberg biopic has grossed $81 million overseas. The global cume is $262.5 million.

MPAA: 2012's Overall Global Box Office Set A New Record on March 21, 2013

Key stats from an official report released by the MPAA today:

•Global box office for all films released in each country around the world reached $34.7 billion in 2012, up 6% over 2011's total, due to an increase in international box office ($23.9 billion) and U.S./Canada box office ($10.8 billion). All international regions with the exception of Europe experienced growth in 2012. Chinese box office ($2.7 billion) grew by 36% in 2012 to become the largest international market, surpassing Japan.

•International box office is up 32% over five years ago, driven by growth in various international markets, including China, Russia and Brazil.

•Over two-thirds of the world's nearly 130,000 cinema screens are now digital.

•2012 U.S./Canada box office was $10.8 billion, up 6% compared to $10.2 billion in 2011, and up 12% from five years ago. 3D box office was similar to 2011 ($1.8 billion), despite fewer 3D film releases.

•The 2012 increase in U.S./Canada box office was due to an equivalent increase in admissions (6%) compared to 2011, as admissions reached 1.36 billion, while the average cinema ticket price stayed flat.

•More than two-thirds of the U.S./Canada population (68%) - or 225 million people - went to the movies at least once in 2012, consistent with prior years. Ticket sales continue to be driven by frequent moviegoers who attend once a month or more. In 2012, frequent moviegoers represented 13% of the population and 57% of all movie tickets, an increase of 7 percentage points in ticket share from 2011, at the expense of occasional moviegoer ticket share. This suggests that the increase in ticket sales in 2012 was among moviegoers who increased their attendance from less than once a month, to once a month or more.

•Broader moviegoer demographic shares remain relatively stable from 2011 to 2012, with 12-24 year olds and Hispanics continuing to oversample in moviegoing versus their proportion of the population - however, 2012 saw increases in the number of frequent moviegoers in nearly every ethnicity and age group, notably in the 40-49 year old group.

•In 2012, 48% of all U.S./Canada moviegoers viewed at least one movie in 3D, with attendance continuing to skew toward younger moviegoers.
