'X-Men: Days of Future Past' Accounts for Strong 90 Percent of Fandango Weekend Sales on May 22, 2014

dofp.pngFilm Poised for Biggest "X-Men" Opening in Fandango History

LOS ANGELES - May 22, 2014 - According to Fandango, the nation's leading moviegoer destination, "X-Men: Days of Future Past" is pacing to be the biggest "X-Men" movie opening in Fandango history, overpowering the company's previous record-holder, 2006's "X-Men: The Last Stand." "Days of Future Past" is currently magnetizing more than 90% of the company's Memorial Day Weekend ticket sales, and topping Fandango's Fanticipation movie buzz indicator, with an impressive 93 out of 100 points.

"Fans will be awestruck by the film's non-stop action," says Fandango Fangirl Tiffany Smith, "and Jennifer Lawrence turns Mystique into a relatable anti-hero who really drives the story. The all-star teaming of the film's ‘past' and ‘future' cast members, plus the fun fan favorite cameos, make it one of the summer's most highly-anticipated blockbusters."

Tiffany Smith interviews "X-Men" star Hugh Jackman in this week's episode of Fandango's movie recommendation show, "Weekend Ticket," reviewing the powerful female characters in the film. "I think one of the great things about ‘X-Men,' from the comic book right to the movie, is that the female characters are strong," says Jackman. "I run into people all around the world and for them, it's not just fun and cool, they related to these characters," he adds. The entire "Weekend Ticket" interview is available for viewing at

About Fandango's Fanticipation
Known for having its finger on the pulse of moviegoers, Fandango's movie buzz indicator, Fanticipation, provides statistical insight into the movies fans are planning to see in a given weekend. Fanticipation scores (based on a 1 to 100-point scale) are calculated via an algorithm of Fandango's advance ticket sales, website and mobile traffic, and social media engagement. Fanticipation is not intended as a forecast of the weekend box office; it is a snapshot of movie fan sentiment.

'X-Men' On Course For Massive Opening on May 22, 2014

By Alex Edghill

Thursday Morning Update: X-Men: Days Of Future Past continued its impressive run on Wednesday as it rose 61% to a whopping 49,523 tweets, up from Tuesday's 30,575 tweets. By comparison, X-Men: First Class had 14,404 tweets on its Wednesday before release, Captain America: The Winter Soldier had 68,321 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had 28,734. It has seen a much greater percentage increase this week than both Cap 2 and Spidey 2 while maintaining a very impressive level of tweets. We are predicting $115 million over its first four days as this could possibly become the highest grossing X-Men movie, a record currently held by X-Men: The Last Stand's $234 million back in 2006.

Not to be left out, Blended had an impressive 54% hike to 6,306 tweets on Wednesday, up from 4,095 tweets on Tuesday. By comparison, Just Go With It had 1,180 tweets its Wednesday before release, Jack And Jill had 858 and Grown Ups 2 had 18,640. Outside of Grown Ups 2 this is the most talked about Adam Sandler movie in 5 years which right there tells me that the long discussed Adam Sandler family-targeted box office dud won't be appearing with this film, and he has at least one more strong opening in him for the genre. $25 million over the first four days seems likely as the Sandler money-printing machine continues.

The first image and video from the Star Wars: Episode VII set were released yesterday which featured a first look at a new character from the film. This alone sent fanboys and girls into a frenzy on Twitter, driving it up to over 13,000 tweets on the day. The first Hobbit movie had a first trailer that exceeded 100,000 tweets and I think this will be in store for a similar type of response. Star Wars is one of the largest, most popular franchises in all of Hollywood, add into that J.J Abrams who is one of the hottest and most talked about directors and writers and it is a perfect storm of social media factors.
