Twitter Futures - 'Mockingjay' Makes Waves on October 03, 2014

Friday Morning Update: As expected, this week's hot ticket item Annabelle was planted firmly atop the Tweet total list for the last 7 days (Friday to Thursday). A few other films also stood out though, namely The Hunger Games: MockingJay Part 1 which is already averaging 10k+ tweets a day even from this distance out (it doesn't open till November 21st). It is generating more buzz than either of its predecessors in the series so far and it would seem as though the lofty heights of $150 million+ are all but assured yet again.

Nine of the top fifteen films on the week are October openers as you would expect since they will be either ramping up their marketing campaigns or in full swing by now. There were a couple curious absences though: Fury, St. Vincent, Book Of Life come to mind, but their very common names lead to extra measures being taken to assure matches for mentions which always serve as a limiter for total tweets (this is one area where Facebook tracking is superior to Twitter in my mind). 

Interstellar is also picking up pace and is up significantly from where Inception was five weeks before release. Of course Twitter in general has seen a big uptick in movie mentions over the last four years but its still worth mentioning since Inception was one of the most tweeted and most trended movies on Twitter at the time.

Geneva Convention Recap on October 02, 2014

Hollywood and the heartland met again at the annual Geneva Convention September 9-11, 2014, at the beautiful Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

"Once again attendance was strong for our annual gathering," said Co-chairman John Scaletta. "We are very pleased with the ongoing support we receive from exhibition, distribution, and industry vendors through their attendance, participation, and sponsorships of Geneva Convention. This year the tradeshow was sold out again with nearly 100 booth spaces."

Attendees were treated to a diverse event schedule that included convention standards such as screenings/studio presentations, panels on topics such as tax credits, hospitality, and the general state of our industry, the NATO issues briefing, and plenty of opportunities for networking. Then there was something more unconventional: a speech from Captain D. Michael Abrashoff, former commander, USS Benfold, about management techniques.

"Although we saw many familiar faces, it is exciting to see the momentum build as new attendees took advantage of the unique programming developed for Geneva Convention," said George Rouman, co-chairman.

Several industry leaders-both on the national level and the local level-received recognition at the event. On the studio side, Lionsgate received the BoxOffice Blue Ribbon Award for having the highest-grossing domestic release of 2013 with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and 20th Century Fox received Studio of the Year. The Ben Marcus Award went to Screenvision's Travis Reid, Cinema Buying Group's Bill Campbell received the Larry Hansen Award, and Sonic Equipment's Eric Olsen accepted the Vendor of the Year Award on behalf of his employer. Joe Delgado of Moving Image Technologies accepted the Friend of Exhibition Award on behalf of industry vet and former-NEC employee Peter Nicholas, who was unable to attend due to sickness. On the local side, three members of the local film community were added to the Midwest Exhibition Hall of Fame: Gene Grengs, Grengs Theatres, Wisconsin; Paul Ayotte, National Screen Service/MTS (posthumously), Minnesota; and Frederick E. Heise, Melody Drive-In, Indiana. Ayotte's son accepted the award on his behalf.

This year's event also raised money for two charities that are highly valued by the film industry. "Since its inception, proceeds of Geneva Convention have benefited two very important industry charities, Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation and Variety Club. To date contributions have exceeded $500,000 to Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation and $100,000 to Variety Club," said co-chairmen Rouman and Scaletta.

Next year's Geneva Convention is scheduled for September 29-October 1, 2015.

 

NORTH AMERICA: 'The Equalizer' Hits $43M in Six Days; 'The Boxtrolls' Approaches $20M on October 02, 2014

Sony reports that The Equalizer tacked on another $2.6 million on Wednesday, off 29 percent from the day prior. Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua's latest hit has tallied $43.3 million in its first 6 days--22 percent more than 2 Guns at the same point in release, and 1 percent ahead of The Book of Eli.

Focus Features' and Laika Animation's The Boxtrolls added $637,338 yesterday for a 26 percent day-to-day drop. The claymation film has grossed $19.5 million in its first six days, topping the studios' Coraline by 0.6 percent and ParaNorman by 5.5 percent.

Fox's The Maze Runner slid 48.5 percent from last Wednesday to $0.91 million yesterday. That gives the young adult hit a $61.1 million domestic take, 30 percent ahead of the 13-day pace of Ender's Game.

This Is Where I Leave You eased 32 percent from last Wednesday to $637,155 yesterday. With $24.5 million in the bank, the ensemble dramedy is running 3 percent behind Trouble with the Curve.

Rounding out the top five, A Walk Among the Tombstones earned $0.41 million on Wednesday for a 55 percent week-to-week drop. The film's total stands at $22.2 million after 13 days. Unfortunately, the noirish thriller starring Liam Neeson is pacing well behind some of his recent flicks.

 

MovieTickets.com: 'Gone Girl' Accounts for 38 Percent of Weekend Sales; 'Interstellar' Pre-Sales Trending Well on October 02, 2014

"Gone Girl" currently tops the list of the films trending now as published on MovieTickets.com homepage. According to MovieTickets.com, domestic box office advance ticket sales for the film account for 38% of all tickets sold by the company in the last 24 hours. "Annabelle" is next up at 11% of all tickets sold in the last 24 hours followed by "Interstellar," which does not come out until November, with 10%. Tickets for the Christopher Nolan film just went on sale and are already selling well.

'Annabelle' Dominates Twitter And Facebook on October 02, 2014

Thursday Morning Update: Annabelle has really taken Twitter and Facebook by storm in its release week with a whopping 155,801 tweets over the last three days and over 1.5 million Facebook likes. Horrors have had a light year at the box office, with none in the genre surpassing $20 million on opening weekend but that is all about to change as these numbers are indeed very strong, indicating that the film has done a great job at tapping into the horror demographic. By comparison, The Conjuring had just over 120,000 tweets over the same three days leading up to its release and just 250k Facebook likes. Now Annabelle is no doubt benefitting from the huge popularity of her predecessor which discounts some of its massive numbers but even with that in mind it looks destined to be the number one horror on the year so far. $27 million is our official prediction here at Box Office, and when you consider its production budget of just $5 million then this is going to be another massive win for James Wan and company.

Gone Girl has been tearing up the Twitter charts, accounting for 33,091 tweets over the last three days while its Facebook like total of 115k has been much more tempered. The film is appealing primarily to older audiences 35+ and as such the lofty heights of its Twitter numbers have been eye opening. By comparison, Argo had just under 8,000 tweets over the same period and just 55,598 likes on Facebook, This looks to be a massive success waiting to happen as Argo should be a very good marker for its potential. We are predicting $31 million for it on the weekend which (surprisingly enough) will be director David Fincher's top debut ever.

Last up is the Christian effort Left Behind which has also been turning heads online, especially on Facebook where it has amassed over 1.3 million likes. Its Twitter number is a much more muted 2,500 but with a pretty generic title it is a much more difficult film to narrow down relevant tweets for than either of the other new openers this week. 2014 has really been the year of the Christian film as there have been numerous big successes including Son Of God, Heaven Is For Real, and God's Not Dead as well as films which have been marketed hard directly to the Christian demographic and done well - Dolphin Tale 2 and When The Game Stands Tall. Nicolas Cage here obviously gives the film a much higher profile and is perhaps attracting others outside of its core demo which will only help its chances. The Facebook number here stands way above the rest I mentioned earlier but its Twitter numbers have lagged (Heaven Is For Real had 30k tweets over the same three day period and Son Of God had 11k). The film is a remake and based on a popular series of novels so it did a headstart on Facebook because of that I suppose. We are calling for $7 million for it on opening weekend.
