Harold & Kumar co-creator/co-writer Jon Hurwitz announced on his Twitter page that, "Harold & Kumar 3 has officially started shooting. That is all." UPDATE: Hurwitz later re-Tweeted updates from John Cho and Patton Oswalt indicating the actors were in the same place, strongly suggesting that Oswalt will be making an appearance in the movie.
Officially titled A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, the third film reportedly takes place after a falling out between the titular characters. The pair are reunited when Kumar burns down Harold's family's Christmas tree, and they are forced to work together in their quest to find a replacement.
Danny Leiner directed the original, while Hurwitz and partner Hayden Schlossberg took the reins on the second. The third (with another script by Hurwitz and Schlossberg) is being taken over by Todd Strauss-Schulson while Hurwitz and Schlossberg concentrate on writing and directing a new theatrical entry in the American Pie franchise. No word on any other casting besides returning stars Cho and Kal Penn, and the potential inclusion of Oswalt, but it seems very likely that David Krumholtz, Eddie Kaye Thomas, and Neil Patrick Harris will be back as well.
The first two installments combined for more than $57 million domestically before finding a wider following on home-viewing platforms (reportedly, the first film grossed more than $60 million on DVD all by itself). The film is slated for release in 2011.
