Blue Valentine, the new drama starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, has been given an NC-17 rating by the MPAA. The Weinstein Company acquired the film at Sundance. The rating is reportedly the result of a sex scene that takes place in a hotel.
The film has been generating a decent amount of Oscar buzz for both Gosling and Williams, and now this controversy may help turn into more of a must-see flick.
BOXOFFICE's Ray Greene gave Blue Valentine 3 stars out of Sundance, writing that, "While this portrait of a shipwrecked marriage is both despairing and perhaps a bit slighter than it thinks it is, there isn't a false moment in it, and though it's hard to see the film finding much of a mainstream audience, as part of the impressive bodies of work both Williams and Gosling are compiling, it's a film that will surely stand."
