GLOBAL: 'Thor: The Dark World' Outgrosses Original in 19 Days

thor2reportcard.pngA massive $52.5 million weekend in 69 territories pushed Thor: The Dark World to a $332.8 million overseas cume. The Thor sequel has already crushed the original’s $268 million overseas total after only 19 days of release.

Thor has already hammered through the overseas box office totals of Captain America ($192M), Iron Man ($267M), Thor ($268M) and Iron Man 2 ($312M). The film’s global total currently stands at $479.7 million, ahead of the original’s $449 million global lifetime gross.

The film opened in Argentina with a $1.8 million bow to take first place in the territory and post a 230% improvement over its predecessor’s premiere. The top markets for Thor: The Dark World are currently China ($41.8M), Russia ($31.6M), U.K. ($27.4M), and Brazil ($20.9M). Thor: The Dark World will open in Italy and Greece and next weekend.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is already hot in Brazil. The highly anticipated sequel opened on Friday, November 15 in Brazil, a week ahead of its day-and-date debut in 65 territories leading into the November 22nd weekend. The film more than doubled the gross of its predecessor with a $6.2 million debut.

Major territories opening in the lead-up to The Hunger Games' November 22 roll-out include: the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, Germany, Spain, China, South Korea, Russia, Mexico, Scandinavia, and the Netherlands. The film will open in France, Belgium, and Italy the following week, with Japan as the last overseas market on December 27. The original Hunger Games grossed $278.5 million overseas and $686.5 million worldwide.

An $18.5 million weekend from 62 markets launched Gravity above the $500 million worldwide milestone. Gravity has now earned $274.3 million overseas and is reporting a $515 million global cume. The top markets for Gravity outside of North America include France ($37.5M), South Korea ($26.5M), the U.K. ($23.2M), and Russia ($20.9M).

Despicable Me 2 continues to add milestones to its terrific overseas run. The film crossed the $550 million overseas mark over the weekend, taking its global cume to $916 million. Despicable Me 2 is Universal’s second highest-grossing overseas release of all time behind Jurassic Park ($636M) and the second highest-grossing film of the year in terms of overseas and global box office. Despicable Me 2 is the fifth-highest grossing animated film of all time at the global box office.

Bad Grandpa opened in Australia and six smaller territories to bring its overseas cume up to $29 million. The Australian debut turned in a #1 result with $3.2 million from 223 locations. The weekend performance is 42% ahead of Jackass Number Two and on par with Jackass 3D. The film became the highest-grossing Jackass release in the U.K. over the weekend after reaching a $9.8 million total in the market. The film’s other top market, Germany, finished with a $9.1 million total. Bad Grandpa will open in Mexico and Brazil on November 29.

Captain Phillips finished the weekend in third place in Germany with a $1.7 million bow. The film added $8.4 million from 62 markets to take its overseas cume to $66.4 million. The top performing overseas market for the Paul Greengrass film continues to be the United Kingdom with $23.6 million. Captain Phillips has earned $164 million worldwide.

Escape Plan took $1.2 million from 199 screens in its French debut. The Stallone/Schwarzenegger vehicle has now earned $78.6 million overseas, saving its poor performance at the North American box office. The film has grossed $92.7 million worldwide.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 hit the $200 million worldwide mark over the weekend. The animated sequel has grossed $87.1 million in its overseas run.

About Time added another $1.9 million from 39 territories to bring its overseas to cume $41.4 million. The film’s global total is $55.6 million.
