Tuesday Morning Update: No Good Deed had a surprisingly strong start to its release week as it raked in 12,554 tweets on Monday, a 40% hike from 8,951 tweets on Sunday. Its Facebook tally of 342k likes also is eye-opening, especially for an early September release. Idris Elba's profile has been on a dramatic rise over the better part of the last decade. There was no huge rush to stardom, instead he has grinded his way upwards, primarily as a character actor and part of a wider ensemble of recognized stars. This marks only his second lead role in a wide release film after Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls seven years ago. Its true that film had the Tyler Perry name behind it (it opened to just over $11 million), but Elba is a much more recognizable star now in North America and with a very dry market this has the potential to stand out. By comparison, The Call had 1,307 tweets its Monday before release and  167,956 likes, and Straw Dogs had 694 tweets and 118,421 likes. The tweets and likes here for No Good Deed are very promising, and really anything even close to $10 million would have to be seen as a win for the film given the slow box office and undoubtedly modest budget.

Dolphin Tale 2 rounds out the new openers for the weekend as it began with 4,242 tweets and 403,456 likes on Monday. It is reusing the Facebook page from the first film like most sequels so it had a massive head start (the page had 315k likes at the beginning of 2014, so not that much of it can be attributed to the sequel yet). Like the first film it is hoping to connect with family audiences, specifically Christian family audiences as it has made a concerted push to market to that particular demographic which has proven to be box office gold over the last few years. By comparison, Dolphin Tale had 1,567 tweets three years ago on its Monday before release and 78,531 Facebook likes. This is definitely a strong beginning for the film but like Free Willy before it a sequel to a surprise family hit often has difficulty walking in its predecessors shoes. The first film opened to $19 million which is a hefty number and one I'm not so sure this has in it, but at the very least it should have enough gas in the tank to best No Good Deed and walk away with the weekend crown, something that eluded the first film in its opening frame.

Tokyu Recreation Co., Ltd. is a Japan-based company mainly engaged in recreation-related business operating in four business segments. The Image segment is engaged in the operation of cinemas, the planning and production of events, as well as the movie distribution and promotion businesses.

Accepting the award on behalf of Tokyu Recreation is Shinzo Kanno, who in March 2014 was promoted to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer. He joined the company in 2007 as Executive Director and was subsequently promoted to Senior Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer prior to his being appointed President and CEO.

Since joining Tokyu Recreation, Mr. Kanno has explored new possibilities in movie theatre operation in the Japanese market and embarked on the digitalization of Tokyu's multiplex circuit, "109 Cinemas." He was also the driving force in introducing the IMAX Digital Theatre System, and contributed most in the current popularity of Premium Large Screen Format in the Japanese market. He opened Japan's first IMAX Digital Theatre in 2009 at 109 Cinemas Kawasaki, providing impressive and inspiring movie experiences to audiences, and creating a new movie fan base.

Currently, Mr. Kanno plays an active role with a broad perspective for innovation and development in the Japanese movie exhibition industry, not only as CEO of Tokyu Recreation, but also as Vice Deputy Chairman of the Japan Association of Theatre Owners; a position he assumed in June 2014.

CineAsia 2014 will take place from December 9-11, 2014 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Hong Kong. It will feature screenings of upcoming Hollywood films, sponsored events, timely and informative seminars, and the CineAsia Trade Show. Disney's Guardians of the Galaxy took in $10.36 million this weekend to remain in first place at the box office. The blockbuster sci-fi superhero adaptation from Marvel has now led the box office for three consecutive weekends and for four of the past six weekends. Guardians of the Galaxy was down 39 percent from last weekend's three-day frame, which represents a very solid hold for the weekend after Labor Day weekend. The film continues to benefit from very strong word of mouth and was also aided by the limited amount of new major releases entering the marketplace this weekend. Guardians of the Galaxy has grossed a massive $294.77 million in 38 days, which leaves the film just $5.23 million away from becoming the first release of 2014 to reach the $300 million domestic milestone.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles held steady in second place with $6.51 million. Paramount's successful franchise re-launch was down a respectable 45 percent from last weekend's three-day performance. While its box office run is slowing down now, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continues to exceed expectations in a very big way with $174.65 million through 31 days of release.

Let's Be Cops inched past If I Stay to place in third with $5.569 million. The two films were separated by only $13,627 for the frame. Fox's low-budget action comedy held up very nicely this weekend, as it was down just 33 percent. The 26-day total for Let's Be Cops stands at $66.77 million. Let's Be Cops continues to be aided from strong word of mouth and from the current lack of new comedies in the marketplace.

Warner's If I Stay followed in fourth with $5.556 million. The low-budget drama starring Chloë Grace Moretz was down a solid 40 percent from last weekend. If I Stay has grossed $39.47 million in 17 days, which is in line with pre-release expectations and represents a very solid performance with the film's cost in mind.

Relativity's The November Man and Universal's As Above/So Below claimed fifth and sixth place with respective takes of $4.31 million and $3.85 million. The November Man was down 46 percent from last weekend, while As Above/So Below fell a significant 55 percent. Respective total grosses stand at $17.98 million for The November Man in twelve days and at $15.71 million for As Above/So Below in ten days.

Freestyle's The Identical, the weekend's only new wide release, debuted with just $1.59 million to place in twelfth. The faith based drama was off to a very soft start, especially when considering that the film was only able to manage a per-location average of $811 from 1,956 locations. The poor performance of The Identical is in sharp contrast to the strong performance of Freestyle's God's Not Dead earlier this year.

Paramount's IMAX re-issue of Forrest Gump also failed to make much of an impact at the box office this weekend. The re-issue of the 1994 blockbuster starring Tom Hanks grossed $381,654 from 337 locations. That gave the film a lackluster per-location average of $1,133 for the frame. The lifetime unadjusted domestic gross for Forrest Gump now stands at $330.08 million.

Costa Mesa, CA - Since 1973, the Norwegian International Film Festival has been held annually in Haugesund, Norway. It runs for 10 days in August, during which attendees have the opportunity to view over 70 films from 24 countries. In the cinema world, the Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund is considered "The Nordic Cannes".

Most of the films are screened at Edda Kino, which has five theatres. QSC Cinema products are installed in four of the venues, including the DCP 100 and DCP 300 digital cinema processors and DCS loudspeakers.

The largest room, Edda 1, which accommodates 529 people, is where the major premieres are screened. Edda 1 is equipped with three model SC-434 4-way screen channel systems, three model SB-7218 dual 18-inch subwoofers, and twenty-four SR Series surround loudspeakers. All the loudspeakers are powered by DCA power amplifiers, including DCA 1622, DCA 2422, and DCA 3422.

"Regular everyday operation of the cinema is made much easier with the QSC DCP processors, a product that communicates perfectly to our existing digital systems," says Thor Vidar Hjelmervik, the festival's Technical Director. "They are incredibly easy to operate, both from booth and from the TMS system we use. Channels and presets can be programmed to our specific needs during a busy festival but also for our rentals."

Installation and system commissioning was done by Videvox, a full-service cinema products dealer based in Sweden with offices in Norway. The Videvox team was led by key accounts manager Ulf Quicklund. Despite the grueling schedule of 250 to 300 screenings within the period of just a little over a week, all went off smoothly without any problems. Hjelmervik says, "I cannot praise them enough; Videvox is a company with true and proper professionals."

lucy.pngLucy is up to $192.2 million overseas after adding $25.5 million from the overseas box office. Director Luc Besson enjoyed his biggest opening weekend in South Korea with the film's $7 million debut from the market. Lucy has grossed $313.4 million worldwide as the film prepares to reach cinemas in Russia next weekend.

Hercules earned $17.1 million in its latest frame overseas, taking its haul outside of North America up to $122.9 million. The weekend's strong numbers came in large part from an expansion that saw a $4.4 million bow in Brazil combined with a solid $3 million start from Germany and $1.4 million debut in Spain. Japan and China are still left on the calendar for Hercules as the action flick currently stands at $194.3 million worldwide.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes brought in $16.6 mllion from 6,187 screens in 19 markets, including a debut in Venezuela that raked in four times the opening weekend of its predecessor. China is responsible for the biggest weekend haul once again with a $13.5 million frame that brings its market total up to $72 million. Dawn has grossed a total of $437.6 million overseas with Japan remaining on the schedule. The film has grossed $643.8 million worldwide.

Into the Storm brought in $11.6 million from 5,360 screens across 54 markets, lifting its total outside of North America to $65.7 million. The overseas haul helped the natural disaster flick cross the $100 million mark worldwide, as it currently stands at $110 million globally. Look for a big bump in business next weekend as the film expands to China on September 12.

Guardians of the Galaxy raked in $11.5 million in its sixth weekend overseas, taking its overseas cume up to $291.6 million and its global haul up to $586 million --$1 million above the global lifetime total of the first Iron Man film. Top markets include the UK ($43.2M), Russia ($36.4M), and Australia ($21.4M). The film will reach theaters in China and Italy this October.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles collected $8.7 million from 48 territories to bring its overseas haul up to $125.6 million. The weekend tally brings its global total to $300 million worldwide with several major markets left on the agenda.

Deliver Us From Evil took in $6.9 million from 43 territories over the weekend, bringing its overseas cume to $34.3 million. The horror flick has grossed a total of $64.8 million worldwide.

The Fault in our Stars edged out The Expendables 3 in a head-to-head battle among two studio openers in Italy en route to a $5 million weekend from 14 markets. The teen drama has grossed over $170 million overseas and $294.7 million worldwide

If I Stay earned $4.6 million from 2,380 screens across 19 markets. The film has grossed $10.75 million overseas and $50 milliion worldwide.

Let's Be Cops enjoyed a $4.1 million weekend from 1,864 screens across 27 markets. The film is now up to $17.6 million outside of North America and $84 million worldwide.

Sex Tape grossed $4 million from 45 markets, bringing its overseas cume to $47.8 million. The raunchy comedy launched to a $2.4 million 5-day debut in the UK on Wendesday and still has major markets like France, Germany, and Italy on its agenda. The film has grossed a total of $86 million worldwide.

Step Up All In pulled in $3.6 million from 46 territories over the wekeend, including a $1.6 million hold from South Korea. The film has grossed $62.9 million overseas and $77.4 million worldwide with an Australian release slated on September 11.

22 Jump Street took in $3.2 million from 27 territories, bringing its overseas cume to $128.8 million. The comedy has grossed $319.4 million worldwide.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 collected $3 million from 2,883 screens in 27 markets. The overeseas cume now stands at $432 million, helping launch the film's global total above $605 million.

Transformers: Age of Extinction grossed $1.9 million from 43 territories, taking its total outside of North America up to $833 million. The film hsa grossed a total of $1.077 billion worldwide

As Above/So Below took in $1.6 million from 19 territories, bringing its overseas cume up to $4.7 million. The horror film has grossed a total of $20.2 million worldwide.
