OVERLAND PARK, KS -- ShowPlex Cinemas, Inc. announced today that guests visiting the Springfield 8 will soon enjoy The IMAX Experience® from IMAX Corporation. Plans have been completed to remodel the lobby, convert the existing auditoriums to all digital projection, add additional parking and expand the complex to 11 auditoriums, including an IMAX auditorium.
The IMAX Experience combines crystal-clear images, powerful digital sound and patented theatre geometry to create a uniquely immersive movie experience. This theatre will feature IMAX's digital projection system, which combines two digital projectors with IMAX's proprietary image enhancer and custom lenses to create an image with greater clarity, brightness and contrast. The images on screen are complemented with IMAX's latest sound system, which features its proprietary loudspeaker technology and uncompressed digital sound. This system has ten times more dynamic range, cuts down on distortion and provides a sound quality that feels more immersive, especially with the added acoustic paneling that absorbs sound and removes echo.
The current 8-screen Springfield complex is targeted for a major renovation and remodel with final completion scheduled for November 2011. When completed, the new Springfield 11 IMAX will offer more than 2,400 seats in 11 auditoriums. In addition to the new IMAX auditorium, ShowPlex Cinemas is adding two new auditoriums with stadium seating and digital capabilities, a completely remodeled lobby and lobby concession stand, as well as a new auxiliary concession stand and new restrooms.
"We are extremely excited to bring IMAX to the City of Springfield! The quality of the IMAX presentation is amazing; it definitely adds a new dimension to the movie-going experience," commented Al Lane, CEO of ShowPlex Cinemas. "With a wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling screen, and high-quality digital projection and sound, our guests will enjoy the best of the best when it comes to major first-run Hollywood releases. Construction started the end of March and we will be open in November with a new look, digital projection throughout the entire complex, and most notably an absolutely incredible IMAX auditorium!" continued Lane.
Guests at Springfield 11 IMAX will take in the world's most immersive cinematic experience when Happy Feet 2: An IMAX 3D Experience opens on November 18, 2011. The movie has been digitally re-mastered into IMAX's format exclusively for presentation in the IMAX auditorium.
The IMAX theatre at Springfield will feature Hollywood's biggest movies that have been digitally re-mastered into IMAX's format.
Other upcoming Hollywood movies to be released in IMAX's format include:
• Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol: The IMAX Experience (December 16, 2011); and

BEVERY HILLS - The Board of Governors of the Motion Picture Academy voted on Thursday to establish a new executive structure for the organization, replacing retiring executive director Bruce Davis with former Film Independent head Dawn Hudson and long-time Academy executive Ric Robertson, who will become the organization's CEO and COO respectively. Robertson will report to Hudson in the new leadership tandem.
Hudson has spent 20 years at the helm of Film Independent, which grew from a small non-profit into a nationally recognized arts institution under her leadership. Film Independent's two signature programs are the 26-year-old Independent Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival, held annually in June.
"The Academy is the gold standard for the world's most influential art form, and I am humbled by what the Board of Governors, the Academy members, and the staff have accomplished under Bruce Davis's leadership." said Hudson. "I am thrilled to have this opportunity to work with Ric, and to carry the Academy's mission forward into the future."
Robertson joined the Academy in 1981 following a short stint with the Los Angeles International Film Exposition (FILMEX), and became the organization's second-in-command in 1989, when he was appointed Executive Administrator. In that position he has overseen the Academy's public programming, its library and film archive as well as its public relations, marketing, legal affairs, and numerous awards-related events and activities.
"Having Bruce as a mentor has been tremendously valuable to me," said Robertson. "It will serve me well as I move into this new management position and partnership with Dawn, as we help to write the Academy's next chapter."
Academy president Tom Sherak said that the new structure for the Academy's executive staff had occurred to the officers of the organization as they began seriously considering the succession issue. "We're a different organization than we used to be," Sherak said, "with a range of activities that couldn't have been conceived of when the present structure came into place. Now, with the leadership team of Dawn as our CEO and Ric as our COO, we have the ideal combination of new vision and institutional continuity to move us forward."
Following a planned bylaw revision, already in the works, Hudson and Robertson will assume their new positions on June 1.

The Crow adaptation will be a reboot of the iconic cult character Eric Draven, who's resurrected as The Crow to avenge his wife's murder so he can reunite with her in the hereafter, as first envisioned by graphic novelist James O'Barr.
"Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is an incredibly talented and imaginative filmmaker," said Tooley. "We are thrilled to have him at the helm and are excited to work with both Pressman and Apaches on what we all believe will be a compelling and innovative reimagining of The Crow."
Producer Edward R. Pressman remarks, "The original Crow was groundbreaking cinema; its gothic visual and musical ideas influenced a generation and cinema itself. With Juan Carlos, we have every confidence that his new Crow will have a similar impact on the contemporary audience."
