christophernolannews2.pngInception's Christopher Nolan won the Best Original Screenplay Award from the Writers Guild of America this evening. The win marks an upset over The Kid Are All Right, which was considered by many to be the heavy favorite. The King's Speech was not eligible to win the WGA award, but it remains the leading contender for the Oscar.

Aaron Sorkin won Best Adapted Screenplay for The Social Network. Nothing can stop Sorkin from also taking home the Oscar at this point.

The other major film win went to Inside Job's Charles Ferguson for Best Documentary screenplay.

Ralph Fiennes is the latest actor to take part in discussions for a role in Sam Mendes' upcoming film, which is yet unnamed but it's the 23rd film in the James Bond franchise. Fiennes is reportedly not in the running for the same role that it was announced earlier this week that Javier Bardem was in talks to play, but a role that was described by an executive close to the production as "darkly complex."

According to the unnamed executive, "it's the first of a new generation of Bond films, and the ideas Mendes has push the film into darker territory where the characters are modern, mature and challenging." While this direction certainly sounds intriguing, it will be interesting to see how far Mendes can and will actually go, for two reasons: in both of the last two installments, Casino Royale and A Quantum of Solace, Bond was already portrayed as a much more sophisticated and complex character than in many earlier films, offering almost precisely the kind of "darker territory" Mendes film promises; and the last time the franchise veered into that sort of material, during the Timothy Dalton era, the choice almost killed the franchise.

However, if both Fiennes and Bardem end up joining the production, it will certainly rank among the most star-studded of the Bond films, and that can't hurt its commercial prospects. Thankfully, Daniel Craig will play Bond himself regardless, at the very least ensuring that Bond will return once again in a familiar form.
