Kristen Stewart, the superstar actress who plays Bella Swan in the Twilight film series, is in final negotiations to take on another iconic literary character in Snow White and the Huntsman. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Rupert Sanders, and Kristen Stewart will join a cast that already includes Charlize Theron and Viggo Mortensen. Palek Patel, who is producing the film with Joe Roth, tweeted that the actress is in negotiations to take on the title role.

If the production gets underway according to its current schedule, shooting will start in August, three months after she completes work on Breaking Dawn, the final installment in the Twilight saga. Once the film is completed, meanwhile, it will find itself competing with The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, a film that distributor Relativity Media is developing with Julia Roberts.

Regal and AMC are reportedly close to joining forces to acquire and release independent movies. The move would give the two giant exhibitorscombined they represent 31% of the nation's screensmore control over how much money they bring in. Traditionally, studios take anywhere from 50-55% of box office receipts.

AMC already runs a program called AMC Independent that allows small films to reach a larger audience. The union will benefit moviegoers in rural areas who don't normally have access to arthouse flicks.

With attendance falling around 5% in 2010, theaters are working hard to come up with new ways to entice patrons. Alternative contentconcerts, operas, sporting events, picking up momentum during weeknights that would traditionally be very slow.

The relationship between exhibitors and studios is starting to feel some strain due to the goal of most studios to being utilizing premium video on demand. Exhibitors fear that allowing moviegoers to access films from home too quickly will seriously cut into their profits, and ultimately put the theatrical business in serious danger.
