LOS ANGELES - July 1, 2015 - According to Fandango, the nation's leading digital destination for moviegoers and fans with more than 36 million unique visitors per month*, "Terminator Genisys" and "Magic Mike XXL," in their opening holiday weekend, are battling for the top position on Fandango's Fanticipation movie buzz indicator, scoring 90 and 88 out of 100 points, respectively. "Jurassic World" and "Inside Out" in their fourth and third weekends, follow closely behind with scores of 84 and 83 points, respectively.

The "Terminator" reboot is generating more advance tickets than seen for the summer action thriller, "San Andreas," at the same point in the sales cycle. Concurrently, "Mike" is also working its magic on moviegoers, outstripping the recent R-rated comedy, "Spy," in advance ticket sales on Fandango at the same point in the film's sales cycle.

"Two high-energy sequels are targeting very different audiences over the long holiday weekend," says Fandango Chief Correspondent Dave Karger. "'Terminator Genisys' will appeal to action fans of all generations, while ‘Magic Mike XXL' is a fun romp that's tailor-made for a girls' night out."

According to a survey of more than 1,000 "Magic Mike XXL" moviegoers on Fandango:
· 93% are Channing Tatum fans;

· 86% will see the movie as part of a girls' night out;

· 81% saw the original "Magic Mike" in the theater;

· 51% would like to see the movie in a dine-in theater that serves alcohol;

· 71% selected Tatum as the returning "Mike" star with the most appeal;

· Former NFL star and current talk show host, Michael Strahan, was voted as the "XXL" newcomer that fans were most excited to see on the big screen.

On Fandango's movie recommendation show, "Weekend Ticket," Karger interviews "Magic Mike XXL" stars Channing Tatum and Stephen "tWitch" Boss. "If you think about all the different choreographed positions we were in, that's hard, " reveals Boss. Tatum adds, "That's ‘Magic Mike' - it was like geometry or strip-ometry." jul1.pngWarner Bros. reports this morning that Magic Mike XXL posted $2.4 million on Tuesday night ahead of its full opening day today. Comparisons at this point are few given the sequel's mid-week release, but that figure does top the $2.1 million earned by the original pic with its Thursday midnight bow in late June 2012. Among recent mid-summer Tuesday night openers, it also bests the $2.0 million of last month's Entourage and This Is the End's $2.2 million in 2013.

Meanwhile, Paramount reports that Terminator: Genisys bowed to an estimated $2.3 million from 2,527 locations with shows starting at 7pm. The studio notes the evening show performance was in line with that of San Andreas ($2.7 million) and Hercules ($2.1 million), both of which opened on Thursday evenings. The studio also confirms the sequel/reboot's production budget to be $155 million.

For further comparison, 2013's Fourth of July weekend opener The Lone Ranger opened to a similar $2.0 million on Tuesday evening (July 2).

Inside Out moved into first place on Monday with $6.92 million. Yesterday marked the fourth time Inside Out has led the daily box office thus far. The critically acclaimed 3D computer animated blockbuster from Disney and Pixar declined 57 percent from Sunday and a healthy 34 percent from last Monday. Inside Out has grossed a stronger than expected $192.06 million in eleven days and is set to surpass the $200 million domestic mark either today or Wednesday. The film is currently running 8 percent ahead of the $178.33 million eleven-day gross of 2013's Monsters University and 19 percent behind the $235.81 million eleven-day take of 2010's Toy Story 3.

Jurassic World placed in a close second with $6.53 million. The 3D blockbuster sequel from Universal and Legendary fell 62 percent from Sunday and 44 percent from last Monday. Jurassic World has grossed a massive $506.90 million through 18 days of release. The film is already the fifth highest grossing film of all-time without adjusting for ticket price inflation and before much longer will move past the $534.86 million final gross of 2008's The Dark Knight to move into fourth place. Jurassic World is running 9 percent ahead of the $463.35 million 18-day take of 2012's Marvel's The Avengers.

Ted 2 continued to underwhelm on Monday with a third place take of $3.68 million. The Seth MacFarlane directed comedy sequel from Universal and MRC was down 59 percent from Sunday. The four-day total for Ted 2 stands at $37.19 million. The film is performing well below pre-release expectations and is running a disappointing 41 percent behind the $63.14 million four-day start of 2012's Ted.

Max followed in fourth place for the day with $1.48 million. The modestly budgeted family film from Warner Bros. and MGM was down a promising 55 percent from Sunday. Max has grossed $13.64 million in its first four days. That is in line with expectations and places the film 24 percent ahead of the $11.01 million four-day start of last year's Earth to Echo (which opened on a Wednesday).

Fox's Spy rounded out Monday's top five with $0.947 million. The Melissa McCarthy led comedy was down 61 percent from Sunday and down just 25 percent from last Monday. Thanks in part to strong holding power over the past two weeks, Spy has grossed $89.41 million in 25 days. The film is set to surpass the $90 million mark today.

Bowing to an underwhelming $27 million last weekend, Hollywood Adventures (横冲直撞好莱坞) failed to live up to its lofty expectations and couldn't attract Chinese moviegoers unimpressed with its premise and humor. This weekend seven new domestic and one new imported film will try to heat up what has been a tepid start to the summer movie season, with two in particular capable of breaking out.

Fifth Generation director Chen Kaige (陈凯歌), best known to Western audiences for his Academy Award nominated Farewell My Concubine, brings an adaptation of the best-selling martial arts novel Monk Comes Down the Mountain (道士下山) to cinemas on Friday. Monk follows innocent Daoist priest He Anxia (played by comedic actor Wang Baoqiang) as he heads down the mountain to escape a famine that has struck his temple. The film boasts an impressive cast in Aaron Kwok (The Detective), Chang Chen (Helios), Lin Chi-ling (Red Cliff), and Fan Wei (If You Are The One), and should play well to wuxia fans and middle-aged crowds.

Monk was originally set to be released during February's Chinese New Year period, but was sidelined due to SARFT's ban on films and tv shows featuring actors who had used drugs or solicited prostitution. Actor Jaycee Chan, son of martial arts star Jackie Chan, was arrested last August on possession of marijuana, but director Chen petitioned the government for months saying it would be impossible to edit out Chan from the movie or reshoot his scenes with another actor.

According to EntGroup's EFMT Index, Monk Comes Down the Mountain has the highest levels of awareness and intent to purchase out of this week's new releases. Barring a complete disaster, we see Monk easily surpassing Chen Kaige's previous best Sacrifice which earned $28.6 million in December 2010.

The second film this weekend with breakout potential is director Derek Yee's I Am Somebody (我是路人甲). Yee takes viewers to the booming eastern city of Hengdian -- "China's Hollywood" and home to the largest outdoor film studio in the world. Young aspiring actors and actresses migrate to Hengdian by the thousands and I Am Somebody follows one such actor Wan Guopeng as he tries to catch his big break. Yee recruited actual Hengdian extras for the main roles and adjusted the screenplay as he shot allowing the amateurs to ad-lib for more natural dialogue.

I Am Somebody could also benefit from several high-profile celebrity endorsements. After seeing a preview screening in Hong Kong, Tony Leung praised the film's realism and saw similarities between Wan Guopeng's dreams and his own aspirations to become an actor thirty years prior. Actress Shu Qi (If You Are The One) also wrote a glowing review and was reminded of her own experiences leaving Taiwan for Hong Kong with nothing but $500 and the desire to act. In a country where the slogan "The Chinese Dream" is plastered across cities nationwide, we think the theme of "following your dreams" will find a receptive audience especially among younger crowds. 

Weekend predictions: Monk Comes Down The Mountain - $27M, Jurassic World - $12M, Hollywood Adventures - $8M, I Am Somebody - $7M

Monday Evening Update: Minions crossed the 30 million like mark over the past week. To put that in perspective, this is now one of the top 10 most liked pages on the social media service ever. Yes ever. Add to the fact that it has led the weekly increase list for the last five and its pretty clear that this is primed for great things to put it mildly. I just couldn't bring myself to post yet another Minions picture for the fifth week in a row so I went with... 

Disney/Marvel are doing their best to push Ant-Man to success but Facebook users just aren't buying it as they have for other recent superhero tentpoles. Despite its biggest weekly increase to date (113,584) it is still lagging behind other notable first-time super-hero adaptations such as Captain America: The First Avenger (610,181), and Guardians Of The Galaxy (671,646 likes). I believe that the Marvel Cinematic Universe alone will ensure a solid run here, as to date only 1 of 12 films in the franchise have grossed less than $175 million domestically (2008's Hulk with $135 million). However, based on this early buzz it would appear that any breakout like Guardians Of The Galaxy might just be wishful thinking.

Paper Towns also crossed its own milestone over the past week as it cracked 1 million likes. Yes its still lagging greatly behind The Fault In Our Stars (which was at 2.4 million the same distance from release) but 1 million likes is a huge number in its own right that shows that it is drawing serious attention via social media.
