Disney's Ant-Man led the daily box office on Monday with $6.40 million. The Paul Rudd led superhero film from Marvel has claimed first place at the daily box office three of the past four days. The film was down 58 percent from Sunday, which was in line with the type of daily percentage holds wide releases experienced in general on Monday. Ant-Man surpassed the $60 million mark on Monday and has grossed $63.63 million in four days. That is on the very low end of pre-release expectations. Ant-Man is currently running 4 percent ahead of the $61.42 million four-day start of 2008's The Incredible Hulk and 13 percent behind the $72.81 million four-day take of 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger.

Minions placed in a close second with $5.78 million. The blockbuster 3D computer animated spin-off from Universal and Illumination Entertainment continues to show signs of significant front-loading as it was down 60 percent from Sunday and down a sharp 55 percent from last Monday. In the bigger picture, Minions is still performing extremely well, especially with its relatively modest cost for a computer animated film in mind. Minions has grossed $221.54 million in eleven days, which places the film 3 percent ahead of the $215.37 million eleven-day take of 2013's Despicable Me 2.

Fellow Universal release Trainwreck took third place with $3.54 million. The critically acclaimed Amy Schumer led comedy from director Judd Apatow decreased 57 percent from Sunday's performance. Trainwreck continues to perform just ahead of the high end of its wide ranging expectations with a promising four-day take of $33.63 million. That places the film 15 percent ahead of the $29.24 million four-day launch of 2011's Bridesmaids and 4 percent behind the $35.13 million four-day take of 2007's Knocked Up. Trainwreck is highly likely to hold up very well throughout the rest of the summer.

Inside Out claimed fourth with $1.58 million. The blockbuster 3D computer animated film from Disney and Pixar was down 53 percent from Sunday and down just 34 percent from last Monday. Inside Out continues to impress with a 32-day take of $307.83 million. The film should continue to hold up well going forward thanks in part to strong word of mouth and the relative lack of other high-profile animated releases throughout the rest of the summer.

Universal's Jurassic World rounded out Monday's top five with $1.37 million. The 3D sci-fi adventure blockbuster sequel fell 58 percent from Sunday and a solid 36 percent from last Monday. Jurassic World has grossed a massive $612.60 million in 39 days of release. The film is currently the fourth highest grossing film of all-time domestically without adjusting for ticket price inflation and is now just $10.76 million away from passing the $623.36 million final gross of 2012's Marvel's The Avengers to move into third place on the list.

EntGroup Consulting & Jonathan Papish @ChinaBoxOffice

Last weekend's box office hit a record $183 million as the top three films (Monster Hunt, Jianbing Man, and Monkey King: Hero Is Back) accounted for $172 million. The three well-received and highly-praised local films have broken nearly every domestic record in the books and while this weekend's box office totals won't reach the same heights, with little in the way of competitive new releases, the holdovers are poised to dominate again.

This weekend's biggest release is Only You (命中注定), an adaptation of Norman Jewison's 1994 romantic comedy starring Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey, Jr. with Tang Wei (Lust, Caution) and Liao Fan (Black Coal, Thin Ice) taking on the roles in this version. While previews took in $250K and played to sold out houses last weekend, we don't see this movie breaking out of the pack of middling Chinese rom-coms.

Another new entry this weekend is Seer 5 (赛尔号5:雷神崛起), the fifth in a series of animated adventure films based on an online game. Installments have been released every consecutive summer since July 2011 and a solid fan base has contributed a total of $34.2 million. Unfortunately, Seer 5's release comes at a time when both Monkey King and Monster Hunt will steal away its core family audience.

Two imported films also enter cinemas this weekend - Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley's Academy Award winning The Imitation Game and the 2012 Italian thriller The Lithium Conspiracy directed by Davide Merengo. The Imitation Game has grossed $220 million worldwide since last November, but despite Cumberbatch's popularity on the Mainland, it won't get much more from Chinese audiences. Merengo's debut Night Bus was a surprise hit in China in 2010 and grossed $270K.

Other films opening this weekend are Aura Star: Attack of the Temple (奥拉星:进击圣殿), Dream Defender (守梦者), Psychic (通灵之六世古宅), and The Hero Chiyou (战神蚩尤).

Weekend Predictions (Fri-Sun): Monster Hunt - $55M, Jianbing Man - $40M, Monkey King: Hero Is Back: $25M, Only You - $20M, Shaun The Sheep - $4M, Seer 5 - $3M

Fastest-Growing Market for 4DX Now Tallies 17 Screens Throughout the Country

Los Angeles, CA - July 21, 2015 - CJ 4DPLEX, an immersive theater technology featuring moving seats and environmental effects, has been expanding its business rapidly in Japan. With six of its 17 total sites opened in this month alone, Japan is now the fastest-growing 4DX market in the world. The six new 4DX auditoriums include three new openings with existing partner United Cinemas, which added screens in Sapporo, the largest city in Hokkaido, as well as Maebashi and Kasukabe, in the suburbs of Tokyo. Another existing partner, Cinema Sunshine, added a new site in Masaki while new partners, 109 Cinemas and Sanyo, each launched their first 4DX screens in Tomiya and Himeji, respectively. Overall, 4DX is planning to reach 25 total sites in Japan by the end of this year.

4DX has a passionate following in Japan, which can be seen by recent strong showings. For example, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Mad Max: Fury Road generated an occupancy rate in 4DX that was five times higher than non-4DX, and Furious 7 recorded a more than 91% average occupancy rate as part of the film's fantastic international opening weekend.

"Not only are audiences filling theatres at record rates to see the latest blockbuster films in 4DX, their positive reactions range from standing ovations in the auditorium to thrilling reactions on social media," said Byung Hwan Choi, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX. "Following a marketing promotion earlier this month, Avengers: Age of Ultron received such positive responses on Twitter and Facebook as ‘It's pretty impressive! A thousand words won't be enough to describe the experience that I just had,' and praise of how the fight scene between the Hulk and Iron Man impacted all five senses. Before the 4DX debut of Pacific Rim last year, Japanese fans held a pre-release party dressed as characters in the film. We are looking forward to seeing more examples of this connection between films and fans, caused by 4DX, as expansion continues throughout Japan."

Upcoming August premieres in 4DX in Japan include the highly anticipated blockbuster sequels Jurassic World, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and the live action re-boot of the animated Attack on Titan. (In 2013, the original Attack on Titan drew an average occupancy rate six times that of regular screenings.)

We wish him every success in his new endeavors."

It has been the thrill of a lifetime to lead this group, and I am sincerely and deeply grateful for their support, but also incredibly proud of our accomplishments," said Mr. Lopez. "I came to AMC over six years ago to strategically transform the company by developing, testing and implementing a differentiated growth strategy. As a team, we have very successfully done exactly that. Shareholder value has grown dramatically and guest satisfaction scores are at their highest level in five years. Simply put, the five action fronts in our guest experience leadership strategy are working. The AMC I leave behind is in good hands and in great shape.
