sep5.pngDisney reports that Guardians of the Galaxy tacked on another $0.73 million on Wednesday, off just 25 percent from the same day last week. The Marvel blockbuster's domestic tally now stands at $297.2 million, 2 percent ahead of the pace of the original Iron Man.

Fox's Let's Be Cops added $0.44 million yesterday for a strong 14 percent week-to-week decline. With $68.2 million in the bank so far, the R-rated comedy continues to hold up very well in the post-summer market.

Relativity's The November Man claimed third place yesterday with $0.41 million. That figure eased 24 percent from last week and brings the pic's cume to $19.4 million, 17 percent behind the pace of The Debt.

Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles took in $0.37 million on Wednesday, down, 33 percent from last week. The reboot's tally stands at a strong $175.9 million.

Rounding out the top five, Disney's The Hundred-Foot Journey posted $0.33 million for a 13 percent week-to-week decline. The flick has tallied $46.6 million to date.

Meanwhile, last week's new release, The Identical, pulled $0.14 million yesterday. With $2.05 million in the bank through 6 days of release, the faith-based flick is unfortunately performing well below the levels it needs to recoup its estimated $30 million production budget.

sep12.pngLOS ANGELES - September 11, 2014 - According to Fandango, the nation's leading moviegoer destination, the family drama, "Dolphin Tale 2" and the psychological thriller, "No Good Deed," top this week's Fanticipation movie buzz indicator and weekend ticket sales on Fandango, jumping ahead of "Guardians of the Galaxy," which has dominated Fanticipation for the last two weeks. "Dolphin Tale 2" is outselling the original "Dolphin Tale," while Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson's "No Good Deed" is outselling the previous Sony thriller "The Call" at the same point in that film's sales cycle on Fandango.

"There's a battle ensuing at the box office this weekend," says Fandango Chief Correspondent Dave Karger, "as two films, ‘No Good Deed' and ‘Dolphin Tale 2,' are selling virtually the same amount of tickets on Fandango to different audiences. A possible breakout hit for families, ‘Dolphin 2' is the first big movie since ‘Planes: Fire & Rescue,' that will appeal to kids of all ages. ‘No Good Deed,' aimed at a more mature audience, is a spine-chiller garnering sizable advance ticket sales partially due to its great social media buzz."

Thursday Morning Update: No Good Deed stepped on the gas again Wednesday as it rose 2% to 11,086 tweets on the day. More impressively, its Facebook number rose to 355,346 likes on the day, up from 349,186 likes on Tuesday. To put its Facebook numbers in perspective a little, it has added more likes on Facebook in the last two weeks than Dolphin Tale 2 has for the entire year. By comparison, The Call had 1,986 tweets its Wednesday before release and 168,675 likes, while Straw Dogs had 1,515 tweets and 123,218 likes. Its social media numbers are truly stellar given the source material and release date - to put it into perspective, it now ranks as the second most discussed September movie in the past 6 years (behind Insidious Chapter 2).Idris Elba et al should be able to rake in $19 million by Sunday which would  give it the crown on the weekend and mark a big win for Screen Gems.

Dolphin Tale 2 also was back in the black on Wednesday as it rose 106% to 5,486 tweets (it had only 2,658 on Tuesday). Its slow Facebook expansion continued though as it inched to 408k likes, up from 406k the day before.  By comparison, Dolphin Tale had 1,641 tweets its Wednesday before release. I am still a bit concerned with the number of spam and garbage tweets being picked up but I believe that even without them it would still have a healthy lead on the first film's tally. While it might not match the opening of its predecessor we are  predicting $17 million on the weekend which will still be a very positive start.

Disney's Guardians of the Galaxy grossed $0.942 million on Tuesday to remain in first place at the daily box office. The blockbuster sci-fi superhero adaptation from Marvel has now led the daily box office for 18 consecutive days. Guardians of the Galaxy was up a solid 30 percent over Monday and down 32 percent from last Tuesday. Guardians of the Galaxy has grossed a massive $296.43 million in 40 days, which leaves the film just $3.57 million away from becoming the first release of 2014 to reach the $300 million domestic milestone.

Let's Be Cops held steady in second place with $0.578 million. Fox's low-budget action comedy increased 32 percent over Monday and was down a slim 20 percent from last Tuesday. The 28-day total for Let's Be Cops stands at a very solid $67.78 million. Let's Be Cops continues to be aided from strong word of mouth and from the current lack of new comedies in the marketplace.

The November Man took in $0.569 million to remain in third. Relativity's action thriller starring Pierce Brosnan was up a very strong 47 percent over Monday and down a healthy 31 percent from last Tuesday. The November Man has grossed $18.94 million in two weeks of release, which is in line with the film's modest expectations.

Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles took fourth place with $0.492 million. The blockbuster franchise re-launch was up 36 percent over Monday and down a respectable 43 percent from last Tuesday. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continues to outpace expectations in a big way with $175.51 million in 33 days.

If I Stay was up one spot and a very strong 49 percent from Monday to round out Tuesday's top five with $0.459 million. In the process, Warner's low-budget drama surpassed the $40 million mark on Tuesday. If I Stay was up 49 percent over Monday and down 36 percent from last Tuesday.

sonypictures.pngCULVER CITY, Calif., September 10, 2014 - Michael Horn has joined Sony Pictures Releasing International as a senior vice president supervising the region of Latin America, it was announced today by Rory Bruer, president, Worldwide Distribution for the studio. Horn will report to Steven O'Dell, president, Sony Pictures Releasing International, beginning October 1.

In his new role, Horn will oversee Latin American distribution operations for the studio, which will also include overseeing local production activity in the region.

Commenting on the announcement, Bruer said, "It's not often that you have the chance for an executive like Michael to join the team. His knowledge, experience, and understanding of the region is unparalleled, but he also brings a passion for the film business that's going to serve us well as we launch new franchises and keep our slate fresh and exciting for audiences."

Horn said, "I've crossed paths with Steven many times - he left me large shoes to fill in Chile and Mexico - but this is the first time we'll be working together, and it's exciting to be on his team. It's an especially auspicious time to be joining Sony Pictures -the studio has an excellent slate of films with rich possibilities in this booming and increasingly important region."

O'Dell added, "Bringing Michael to the Sony Pictures family is a big win for us. He has a great reputation within the industry as a keen strategist and a bold, creative marketer, and has proven his abilities on films ranging from the most challenging titles to the biggest of blockbusters."

Horn has served as Vice President and Managing Director of Paramount Pictures Mexico since 2007. Prior to that, Horn was the Managing Director for United International Pictures in both Chile and Mexico from 1997-2007, handling the combined film slates from Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, Dreamworks SKG, Focus Features and Paramount Classics.

Over his 17 years in International Distribution in Latin America, he has released a prodigious list of blockbusters and established some of the most noteworthy franchises in Mexican box office history, including Transformers, The Fast and the Furious, Madagascar, Shrek, Mission: Impossible, G.I. Joe, Paranormal Activity, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
