gdc.pngHong Kong (June 25, 2015) - GDC Technology Limited ("GDC Technology"), a world leading digital cinema solutions provider, is pleased to announce that it has entered into Virtual Print Fee (VPF) agreements with six exhibitors in Argentina - Village Cines, CCA CinemaCenter, Cines Multiplex, Atlas Cines, CPM and Cinema la Plata Cinemas - to manage a financial subsidy that assists with costs involved in the chains' conversion to digital cinema. Collectively, the six converted a total of 241 screens, at 41 locations, to digital last year, reaching 100% digitization. Under the VPF program, these exhibitors will recoup a portion of their investment via their VPF agreements with GDC Technology.

A proven expert in a critical new field

Building on past success
Jan Daem's work at LIPA has exemplified the required balance between simplifying the regulation of lasers as light sources for projection, while preserving the industry's commitment to operator and end-user safety. Jan successfully led the European regulatory strategy and - together with his colleagues at LIPA and world-class laser safety experts - convinced the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to evaluate laser-illuminated projectors as ‘lamps'. He did this by providing peer-reviewed scientific evidence that laser-illuminated projectors present no greater risk than lamp projectors of equivalent brightness.

Meticulous and methodical
"Jan has been meticulous and methodical, a combination that has been the key to his success," says Bill Beck, one of LIPA's co-founders, past chairmen, and currently The Laser Guy at Barco. "Jan's most recent contribution to LIPA was as head of the financial committee, providing an excellent foundation for his chairmanship." Jan was unanimously elected by his peer directors and began his term on 1 June 2015.

The road ahead
As chairman, Jan will face one more challenge - to complete LIPA's US regulatory strategy, bringing the US FDA/CDRH into alignment with the new IEC regulations he helped to develop. With this, LIPA's primary regulatory mission will be complete. After that, LIPA will shift emphasis to its other missions: to accelerate the global adoption of laser-illuminated projectors in both cinema and non-cinema applications and to provide guidance and best practices to its members and users of laser-illuminated projectors around the world.

Jurassic World held off Inside Out in a very close race on Tuesday to remain in first place at the daily box office. The Chris Pratt led 3D blockbuster sequel from Universal and Legendary took in $13.13 million on Tuesday, which topped Inside Out by a very slim $91,652 for the day. Jurassic World has led the daily box office for eleven of the past twelve days. The film was up 13.5 percent over Monday and down a solid 46 percent from last Tuesday. The twelve-day total for Jurassic World stands at a massive $427.50 million. Without adjusting for ticket price inflation that already ranks the film as the 11th highest grossing film of all-time domestically. And by the end of today Jurassic World is set to move into tenth place on the all-time list. Jurassic World is currently running $38.03 million and 10 percent ahead of the $389.47 million twelve-day take of 2012's Marvel's The Avengers.

Inside Out placed in an extremely close second with $13.04 million. The critically acclaimed 3D computer animated film from Disney and Pixar increased a healthy 24 percent over Monday's performance. Inside Out has grossed a much stronger than expected $113.96 million in five days of release. Compared to previous blockbusters from Pixar, Inside Out is running an impressive 8 percent ahead of the $105.30 million five-day start of 2013's Monsters University and 19 percent behind the $141.04 million five-day take of 2010's Toy Story 3.

Fox's Spy held steady in third place with $1.69 million. The Melissa McCarthy led comedy was up an impressive 35 percent over Monday and down only 20 percent from last Tuesday. Spy continues to stabilize as of late thanks in part to strong word of mouth and strengthening summer midweek business. The film has grossed a respectable $78.05 million in 19 days.

Warner's San Andreas took in $1.20 million to remain in fourth. The Dwayne Johnson led 3D disaster film was up 26 percent over Monday and down a very slim 15 percent from last Tuesday. San Andreas continues to significantly exceed pre-release expectations with a 26-day take of $134.86 million.

Open Road's Dope rounded out the day's unchanged top five with $0.851 million. The critically acclaimed Rick Famuyiwa directed comedy drama was up 8 percent over Monday. That represented the day's softest daily percentage increase among wide releases. Dope has grossed $7.74 million in five days. That is slightly below expectations and places the film 11 percent ahead of the $6.95 million five-day start of last year's Beyond the Lights.

Immersive Cinema Experience Coming to Nu Metro's Cape Town and Durban Locations by the End of the Year


BARCELONA-June 24, 2015 - CJ 4DPLEX, creator of 4DX - the world's first 4D cinema technology for feature films - and Nu Metro Cinemas, the fast-growing South African cinema operator, have announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a partnership that will for the first time bring 4DX to Africa.

This MOU was signed at CineEurope this week - a preliminary step before signing an agreement shortly - where CJ 4DPLEX has been holding additional meetings with potential exhibitor partners. 4DX, which uses motion, vibration, water, wind, lightning, scents, and more to provide moviegoers with a truly immersive experience, has been expanding at a fast pace and, with this deal, will be available in 182 auditoriums across 34 countries, with a goal to reach 300 auditoriums by the first half of 2016. In the past week, CJ 4DPLEX has also announced expansion into Turkey, while also celebrating the one-year anniversary of the debut of 4DX in the United States, where it has attracted 70,000 attendees since last June - an increase of 88% versus the previous 12 months in the same auditorium prior to its conversion to 4DX - and generated more than $1.52 million in revenue.

"4DX continues to outdeliver non-4D feature film performances around the world, as it expands into new markets, and now to its fifth continent," said Byung Hwan Choi, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX. "Nu Metro Cinemas has recently been adding new features and expanding its reach, and we look forward to working with them as both companies continue to grow."

The first South African locations to feature 4DX will be at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town (Africa's largest and most popular tourist attraction) and The Pavilion in Durban (a popular shopping mall in one of South Africa's key holiday destinations), both opening before the end of 2015, with three other sites in the planning process. The first Metro Theatre opened its doors in November 1932 in Johannesburg, and the company now operates 17 cineplexes throughout the country. With a presence in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Bloemfontein - reflecting all major regions nationwide - Nu Metro continues to add locations.
