Monday Morning Update: Straight Outta Compton led all films this past week on Facebook with 95,414 new likes, bringing its total to just over 750,000 overall. Universal decided to attach its trailer ahead of the monster that is Furious 7 and it immediately paid big dividends, gaining over 200k new likes since the beginning of April. Social media in general has responded very well to trailers and marketing for the film and given the level of notoriety to this day for NWA and its founding members (especially Dr. Dre and Ice Cube) I don't think its a far stretch to think this could be the next 8 Mile and simply dominate the box office in mid August.

Unfriended did make the magic 1 million like mark before release like I had predicted many moons ago. This is significant because it is the first original horror I have ever tracked that has crossed that mark before release. That list includes Paranormal Activity, Sinister, Insidious, and The Conjuring to name a few. Its hard to gauge just how this will translate to box office dollars since its target demographic lines up very well with social media power users but its difficult to ignore the sheer level of interest here from its first trailer through to release. We are currently predicting $21 million for its opening frame which will afford it a very profitable run and perhaps even sequel considerations.

After its first trailer went largely unnoticed on social media, the second trailer for Hot Pursuit finally put it on the map for the first time on Facebook. It rose 75k tweets this past week thanks to the trailer, more than a 400% rise from the sub 20k total it had languished at for months. The film will likely skew female and with a majority of patrons being over 30 which is slightly outside of the social media sweet-spot so I'm not too worried about the lack of chatter so far.
