TORONTO -- IMAX Corporation today announced the launch of its new nXos Calibrator, a patent-pending technology designed to tune and automatically monitor IMAX audio systems. The new technology applies the equivalent of thousands of bands of equalization to perform a highly detailed tuning of the IMAX audio system. IMAX nXos Calibrator is designed to significantly exceed the capability of manual equalization processes.

IMAX's audio systems feature proprietary loudspeaker technology and uncompressed digital sound, with much greater dynamic range than conventional systems. The system is designed to provide a more immersive audio environment. The IMAX nXos Calibrator works to ensure that the audience is provided an optimum audio experience in the IMAX(R) theatre.

"We developed the nXos Calibrator to maximize the listening experience for moviegoers and to make the operation of IMAX theatres easier for exhibitors who are often responsible for simultaneously monitoring dozens of screens in addition to their IMAX venue," said Brian Bonnick, IMAX's Executive Vice President, Technology. "The automation of this groundbreaking technology will enable operators to calibrate more frequently and with much more accuracy than what is done in conventional theatres."

The IMAX nXos Calibrator was developed in cooperation with Audyssey, the leader in audio equalization technology. Based on a proprietary implementation of Audyssey's MultEQ XT technology, the IMAX nXos Calibrator applies Digital Signal Processing technology to tune and monitor IMAX audio systems. The new technology provides remote monitoring to allow IMAX technicians to know on a day-to-day basis the status of nXos equipped audio systems. The system can automatically apply corrections if changes in audio calibration are detected.

nXos Tuning

Using a proprietary version of MultEQ XT technology, IMAX technicians measure audio performance at over twenty locations in the theatre. The MultEQ algorithms calculate an optimal equalization based on loudspeaker and room acoustics to provide a consistently high level of audio performance in each auditorium.

nXos Calibration

System tuning is not the last step in maintaining IMAX audio quality. On a regular basis, IMAX's nXos technology applies test signals to each audio channel, and by means of permanently installed microphones, measures the performance of the IMAX audio system. If significant variation in performance is detected, correction is applied to return the system performance to its pre-determined value. Results are reported to the IMAX Network Operations Centre at IMAX's headquarters. Technicians have the capability to remotely access the IMAX nXos Calibration system to observe results, modify tuning parameters and perform diagnostic tests.

Steven Spielberg will next direct an adaptation of Robopocalypse, a sci-fi novel about a robot revolution against the human race. Drew Goddard is adapting the script from Daniel H. Wilson's novel.

Spielberg's The Adventures of Tin-Tin: Secret of the Unicorn is set to hit theaters on December 28, 2011 and another film of his, War Horse, will open five days later.

Mel Gibson will take on a cameo role as a Bangkok tattooist in The Hangover 2. The Warner Bros. release is set to hit theaters on May 26, 2011.

This will provide Gibson the opportunity to poke fun at himself after the rush of bad PR he was hit with after his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva released tapes of him verbally abusing and threatening her.

The actor currently has The Beaver from director Jodie Foster in the bag, but Summit has not announced a release date yet for it.

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE -- In keeping with annual tradition, Malco Theatres presents Wrapped with Love for the continued research of childhood diseases at Memphis' own St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

This program, in its thirteenth year, kicks off Thanksgiving Day (November 25) and runs through Christmas Day (December 25) at all 31 Malco Theatre locations in Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky and Mississippi. Theatre employees will be selling the bows for $1.00 each and the bows are hand-made from actual film. Each bow is made of about 24 frames, which is about one second of a movie. The sound for each movie is encoded on the edge of the film and appears green. It's believed these bows may eventually be collectors' items as the film industry progresses into digital technology.

As the materials and volunteer production hours for the bows are donated, there is no cost to Malco Theatres; the true beneficiary is St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In a joint effort for this cause, patients of St. Jude and their families participated in the creation of the bows at the hospital. During the activity, reels of movie trailers were cut, stapled and sealed with a special sticker that reads "Wrapped With Love...To Benefit the Kids of St. Jude."

Since 1999, Malco Theatres has raised almost half a million dollars for St. Jude. Over 69,000 bows were sold during the 2009 Wrapped with Love campaign and this year's goal is to sell an additional 75,000 of the collectible film décor.
