The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies grossed $22.4 million from 57 markets, lifting the overseas total to $664.2 million. China's second weekend brought in $20.2 million of that figure, helping China unseat Germany as the top foreign market for the film with a $92.6 million cume. The final Hobbit film has grossed $915.8 million globally.

Taken 3 earned $21.2 million following an expansion in Latin America, lifting its overseas total to $164.5 million. Mexico led new openers with a $3.5 million bow. The action flick has grossed a total of $245.7 million worldwide.

Big Hero 6 took a $6 million debut ($6.8M including previews), taking over the top spot in the market. South Korea continues to hold well for the film, dropping only 14% in its second weekend as it took the top spot. The two territories helped Big Hero 6 net $20.1 million over the weekend, lifting its overseas cume to $266.6 million. Japan continues to lead foreign markets with a $63 million total. Big Hero 6 has grossed $484.7 million worldwide.

American Sniper grossed $11.1 million over the weekend. The film has now grossed $67.3 million outside of North America as it continues to grow domestically. The Clint Eastwood film has made $316.2 million globally.

The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water hit screens overseas this weekend, playing at 935 locations in 5 territories. The film brought in a strong $6.7 million debut in Mexico from 672 locations, claiming the top spot in the market. Spongebob opens in North America next week with an $8 million head start from this weekend's results.

The Theory of Everything opened in second place in Australia, netting $1.3 million at 241 dates. The weekend total from the film brought in a total of $7.5 million. The awards contender has grossed a total of $51.2 million overseas and $81.8 million globally.

Kingsman: The Secret Service launched overseas ahead of its North American release, taking a combined $7.2 million from the UK and Sweden. The UK debut netted $6.7 million from 950 locations.

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb crossed the $200 million mark overseas after a $6.8 million weekend. The film took the top spot in Italy with a $2.78 million debut from 416 screens. The film has grossed a total of $204.7 million outside of North America and $314.4 million globally.

Penguins of Madagascar made $6.7 million in its latest frame overseas. The film opened to $1.2 million from 235 screens in Poland. The film retained the #1 spot in Brazil for a third consecutive weekend with a $1.9 million haul, liftings the Brazilian cume to $13.4 million. The film has now grossed $252.5 million outside of North America and $333.8 million globally.

Unbroken made $6.4 million from 46 territories, reaching $36 million cume outside North America. A #4 debut in China contributed $2.9 million, while its Italian debut brought in $1.3 million in a #3 finish. The drama has grossed $150 million worldwide.

Birdman is flying high thanks to awards buzz surrounding the film. The art-house favorite added $4.7 million to its tally, including a $785k bow from 156 screens in Germany. The film has grossed $26 million overseas and $59.2 million worldwide.

Into The Woods grossed $4.7 million over the weekend, lifting its overseas total to $40.6 million. The musical has grossed $165 million worldwide.

Exodus: Gods and Kings expanded to its final market, Japan, where it grossed $2 million from 678 screens. The weekend tally amounted to $4.4 million. Exodus has grossed $195.6 million overseas and $260.2 million worldwide.

Seventh Son continues to earn overseas ahead of its North American debut. The film grossed $2.7 million from 45 territories, including a $281k bow in India, to reach an $82 million cume. China leads the overseas markets with a $25.7 million total.

Sunday Update: Warner's American Sniper dominated the box office for a third consecutive weekend with an estimated $31.85 million. That represented the largest unadjusted Super Bowl weekend gross ever (the previous record being the $31.12 million debut of 2008's Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour). The blockbuster Clint Eastwood directed film starring Bradley Cooper was down a sizable 51 percent from last weekend, as the film clearly took a hit this weekend from its target audience being focused on Super Bowl XLIX. American Sniper will likely re-stabilize next weekend with the Super Bowl out of the way. The film has grossed a massive $248.94 million after 17 days of wide release. That places American Sniper a very impressive 47 percent ahead of the $169.56 million 17-day take of 2013's Gravity.

With moviegoers not interested by the weekend's three new wide releases, Paddington moved into second place with an estimated $8.505 million. The well received family film from The Weinstein Company was up one spot from last weekend and down a slim 31 percent. In addition to being aided by good word of mouth, Paddington also likely received an added boost this weekend from family audiences who wanted to catch the film before Paramount's The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water arrives in the marketplace next weekend. Paddington surpassed the $50 million mark this weekend and has grossed a very solid $50.54 million in 17 days.

Paramount's Project Almanac was the weekend's top opener with an estimated third place start of $8.50 million (with Paddington and Project Almanac currently only separated by $5,000, the race for second place is obviously too close to call). However, the low-budget sci-fi thriller opened significantly below pre-release expectations, as it failed to spark much interest among moviegoers. Project Almanac opened a very disappointing 57 percent below the $19.88 million start of fellow Platinum Dunes film Ouija this past October. Project Almanac was likely hurt at least somewhat by having been delayed by nearly a year. On a positive note, Project Almanac did receive a B rating on CinemaScore, which is very solid given the film's genre.

Relativity's Black or White debuted in fourth with an estimated $6.46 million. The drama starring Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer opened on the high end of its modest expectations, as the film was able to find a bit of audience this weekend despite poor critical reviews. Black or White performed very similarly to the $6.20 million start of Relativity's Beyond the Lights this past November. Black or White received an encouraging A- rating on CinemaScore, which suggests that the film is going over significantly better with moviegoers than it has with critics.

The Boy Next Door rounded out the weekend's top five with an estimated $6.1 million. Universal's low-budget thriller starring Jennifer Lopez was down 3 spots and a very sharp 59 percent from last weekend. The Boy Next Door has grossed a solid $24.69 million in ten days, but is likely to continue to fall off quickly going forward, especially with the upcoming release of Universal's highly anticipated Fifty Shades of Grey now in the near horizon.

Sony's The Wedding Ringer followed in sixth place with an estimated $5.7 million. The modestly budgeted comedy starring Kevin Hart and Josh Gad fell 50 percent from last weekend. The Wedding Ringer is on the verge of reaching the $50 million mark with a 17-day gross of $48.14 million.

Further down on this weekend's chart nether Open Road's The Loft nor A24's A Most Violent Year were able to pack much punch. The Loft debuted in tenth place with an estimated $2.88 million. Meanwhile, A Most Violent Year landed in thirteenth place with an estimated $1.70 million from 818 locations. The Loft suffered from being given a last minute wide release (after being long delayed), while A Most Violent Year has seen its early momentum come to a halt after not receiving a Best Picture nomination. A Most Violent Year has grossed $3.17 million to date.

Warner's Game of Thrones The IMAX Experience had a far more respectable performance this weekend with an estimated $1.50 million from 205 IMAX locations. That gave the theatrical release consisting of the final two episodes of Season 4 of the popular HBO series a healthy per-location average of $7,322 for the frame. Game of Thrones The IMAX Experience is scheduled to play in IMAX locations through February 5th.

Saturday Update: Warner Bros. reports that American Sniper easily led Friday's box office for a third consecutive week, adding an estimated $10.02 million to its blockbuster haul. That figure is down 45 percent from last Friday and brings the film's total up to $227.1 million through 15 days of wide release -- on par with the pace of The Passion of the Christ and 53 percent ahead of where Gravity stood at the same point. BoxOffice projects a $30.5 million Super Bowl weekend take.

Paramount's Project Almanac debuted to $3.2 million on Friday. Unfortunately, that falls short of even conservative expectations heading into the weekend. The modestly budgeted (estimated $12 million production) found-footage thriller should land around $8.2 million for its opening weekend.

Black or White debuted to $2.27 million yesterday. Unfortunately, the pic had the disadvantage of opening in a market already featuring Selma as the primary option for moviegoers looking for a drama tackling racial subject matter. BoxOffice projects a $6.1 million debut weekend.

The Boy Next Door was off 63 percent from last week to $2.1 million on Friday. With $20.7 million in the bank through 8 days of release, look for a sophomore frame around $6.0 million.

Paddington took in another $1.94 million on Friday for a 25.5 percent week-to-week drop. With $44 million in the bank, BoxOffice projects an $8 million frame.

The Imitation Game added $1.61 million yesterday, down just 16 percent from last Friday and boosting its total to $64.4 million. BoxOffice projects a $5.3 million weekend.

Meanwhile, The Loft bowed to $1.18 million yesterday. With a late release announcement and very little marketing push, the film was not expected to make a big splash at the box office. BoxOffice projects a $3 million weekend.

Last but certainly not least, Game of Thrones: The IMAX Experience grabbed a strong $686,000 from 205 IMAX locations, giving it a $3,348 per-screen average. As the first television series ever released in the premium format, fans had been driving strong pre-sales over the last few weeks. Comparisons are few and far between, but look for a weekend in the neighborhood of $1.3 million.

Friday Update: Sources report that Project Almanac bowed to $375K from Thursday evening shows. That's noticeably behind Into the Storm's $800K early show take last August, although that film had the advantage of opening during late summer when schools were out.

Also opening this weekend are Black or White (which earned $115K from Thursday shows) and The Loft, though none of the three newcomers will be able to unseat American Sniper from the top spot over Super Bowl weekend.

Warner's American Sniper took in $3.67 million on Thursday to lead the daily box office for a fourteenth straight day. The blockbuster Clint Eastwood directed film starring Bradley Cooper was down 4 percent from Wednesday and down a significant 52 percent from last Thursday. American Sniper easily led the weekly box office with $81.32 million for the frame. That was down a healthy 39 percent from the previous week and places the film's domestic total at $217.09 million after two weeks of wide release. American Sniper is running an extremely impressive 56 percent ahead of the $139.54 million two-week take of 2013's Gravity.

The Boy Next Door held steady in second place with $0.792 million. The Jennifer Lopez led thriller from Universal fell 6 percent from Wednesday's performance. The Boy Next Door placed in second for the week with $18.59 million. The film was off to a very solid start this week, especially with its low production budget in mind. The Boy Next Door is running 18 percent ahead of the $15.71 million seven-day take of 2010's The Back-Up Plan.

Sony's The Wedding Ringer took in $0.685 million to remain in third. The modestly budgeted comedy starring Kevin Hart and Josh Gad was down 4 percent from Wednesday and down 42 percent from last Thursday. The Wedding Ringer placed in third for the week with $14.367 million. That was down 49 percent from the previous week and brings the film's two-week total to a solid $42.44 million.

The Weinstein Company's The Imitation Game continued to claim fourth with $0.542 million for the day. The Best Picture nominee starring Benedict Cumberbatch fell a slim 2 percent from Wednesday and just 13 percent from last Thursday. The Imitation Game placed in fifth for the week with $9.28 million and has grossed a healthy $62.78 million to date.

Fellow Best Picture nominee Selma was up two spots and 14 percent over Wednesday to round out Thursday's top five with $0.480 million. The critically acclaimed film from Paramount finished in seventh this week with $7.19 million. That was down 55 percent from the previous frame and places the film's total gross at $40.91 million after three weeks of wide release.

Paddington was down one spot and 2 percent from Wednesday to land in sixth with $0.447 million. The well received family film from The Weinstein Company placed in fourth for the week with $14.364 million. Paddington was down 48 percent from last week and has grossed $42.04 million in its first two weeks.

Fantastic Four debuted its first trailer on January 27th where it generated a hefty 89,991 tweets and has seen more than 100,000 new tweets this week so far.

Disney's Marvel Universe has dominated super-hero films (and indeed social media) in recent times with titles such as Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, The Avengers and the upcoming Ant-Man all being/projected to be massive successes.Fox is trying to build their own mini-empire out of comic heroes it has rights to, namely the X-Men and Fantastic Four. Their reboot of X-Men has been largely successful, and now their sights get turned to Fantastic Four. While the first two films in the Fantastic Four franchise did generate over $600 million worldwide in sales, the critics were never kind, and with an aging core cast (not to mention that one of the four went on to become Captain America) Fox chose to rebuild the franchise, just like they had done with X-Men: First Class a few years ago. They chose to go with talented up-and-coming young actors which they could build a potential franchise around provided the reaction from fans and critics warranted it.

So far the film is getting two thumbs way up from Twitter and Facebook. By comparison, the recent Ant-Man trailer had 55,356 tweets with its first trailer and less than a 100k new likes on Facebook since its release over three weeks ago. Avengers: Age Of Ultron predictably dwarfed it though, with its 205,739 more than doubling it. This is a largely positive start for Fantastic Four and Fox should be very happy with the buzz so far. With the relative unknown Guardians Of The Galaxy opening to $94 million a similar time last year the precedent is clearly set for this to have a great run this late Summer if it has the story and visual to back up its impressive trailer.
