The #1 film overseas for the second consecutive weekend was China’s Monster Hunt which grossed an additional $51.78 million (-37%) to become the highest-grossing local film of all-time in China with $221.13 million. The previous record holder was buddy comedy Lost In Thailand which earned $201 million in 2012. The live action/CGI hybrid from Shrek’s animation supervisor Raman Hui now sits at #5 on China’s all-time list inching closer to Jurassic World ($228.7 million) and Avengers: Age of Ultron ($235.8 million).
Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s global hit Minions grossed $45.3 million (-32%) from 59 overseas markets this weekend, lifting its international total to $499.4 million and its worldwide total to $761.8 million. Minions opened at #1 in Peru with $1.9 million which is 72% bigger than Despicable Me 2 and at #1 in Portugal with $1.2 million which is the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated film there. Minions has held onto the top spot for three consecutive weeks in France, Venezuela, Belgium, Croatia, Hungary, Latvia, and Romania and for four consecutive weeks in Germany, Austria, Argentina, Chile, Estonia, Finland, Norway, and the Netherlands. The film has 7 more territories to release over the next two months: South Korea (July 29), Japan (July 31), Slovenia (August 13), Italy (August 27), Turkey (September 4), China (September 13), and Greece (September 24).
Ant-Man burrowed into 11 additional overseas markets this weekend and hauled off $35.4 million (-37%) from 49 total territories, bringing its international total to $120.4 million and its global tally to $226.47 million after two weeks of release. Among new territories, Germany and Spain opened poorly with the Marvel/Disney flick taking third place in both markets behind Inside Out and newcomer Pixels in Spain and trailing Minions and Magic Mike XXL in Germany. Strong holdovers include the UK/Ireland — down 42% with an estimated $14.7 million total, Taiwan — down just 17% for $8.1 million total, and Hong Kong — off 31% for $5.1 million. Ant-Man has outgrossed Guardians of the Galaxy in both Taiwan and Hong Kong in just 11 days of release.
Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man has opened in ~61% of its total international footprint and will open in Lebanon and South Africa next weekend.
Inside Out posted an estimated $28.3 million (+33%) in its sixth weekend of release from 51 overseas territories. It has now earned $229.8 million overseas and $550.135 million worldwide with 28% of its international marketplace still to open. The film had the widest release in history in the UK/Ireland, opening in 608 locations and grossing $10.9 million for the top spot in the market which is 36% ahead of Monsters University and 4% ahead of Brave. Other top grossing markets include Mexico ($30.0M), Australia ($22.0M), South Korea ($21.8) where Inside Out is the second biggest Disney release ever behind Frozen, France ($20.0M), Russia ($18.8M), Argentina ($16.8M), Brazil ($12.6M), and Japan ($10.4M). Additionally, the Latin American and Middle East regions had strong holds of -35% and -28% respectively.
China’s superhero spoof Jianbing Man (Pancake Man) grossed an additional $27.16 million (-60%) this weekend in the Middle Kingdom, bringing its 10-day total to $139.35 million.
Pixels began its global rollout along with its North American release this weekend and took in $21 million from 56 international territories on 7,100 screens. The early international cume is up to $25.14 million (South Korea opened last weekend with $4 million) and the worldwide total is $49.1 million. Pixels’ international opening is 39% ahead of The Lego Movie across the same markets. In Latin America, the film opened at #1 in Brazil ($3.1 million), Mexico ($3.7 million), Argentina ($2.3 million), Bolivia, Colombia, and Uruguay. Pixels also opened at #1 ahead of Ant-Man and Minions in Russia ($2.7 million) and ahead of Ant-Man in Spain ($1.3 million). Key future releases are Italy (July 29), Germany (July 30), the UK/Ireland (August 12), Australia (September 10), Japan (September 12), and China (September 15).
Monkey King: Hero Is Back earned $15.57 million (-40%) in China this weekend. After 17 days of release, the 3D animated family film has grossed $108 million and is the highest-grossing animated film of all-time in China.
Paramount Pictures’ reboot Terminator: Genisys earned $10.7 million (-50%) this weekend from 64 overseas territories, lifting its international total to $219.3 million and its global haul to $305.3 million. Top territories this week were Japan ($1.7M/$16.6M cume), Germany ($1.1M/$7.7M cume), UK/Ireland ($761K/$16.1 cume), France ($665K/$9.8M cume), and Argentina ($609K/$5.2M cume). The struggling fifth chapter in the Terminator franchise will try to win over Chinese audiences when it opens on the Mainland August 23.
Jurassic World took in $8.3 million (-35%) from 63 territories this weekend. Its global record-breaking run continues with a total of $918.5 million overseas and $1.543 billion worldwide. Universal’s dino blockbuster now sits at #3 all-time worldwide behind Titanic and Avatar. Jurassic releases in its final territory Japan on August 5.
Paper Towns opened to $7.5 million from 35 new markets this weekend in addition to Australia, Brazil, and Argentina and New Zealand. Its early international cume is $15.6 million and after this weekend’s NA release, Paper Towns has earned $30.0 million worldwide. Top openings were Mexico ($1.54 million on 880 screens, #4 in market), Venezuela ($624K on 36 screens, #6 in market), the Philippines ($566K on 137 screens, #2 in market), and Russia ($504K on 685 screens, #6 in market). Paper Towns comes to 18 additional territories next weekend including Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
Magic Mike XXL danced to an excellent $2.8 million on its opening weekend in Germany to take #2 ahead of fellow opener Ant-Man. The sequel grossed $6.2 million (+16%) from 42 total overseas markets, bringing its international cume to $39.9 million and its global total to $103.3 million. Mike undresses next in Brazil on July 30.
Southpaw stepped into the ring in 11 territories this weekend and scored $4.4 million from 230K admissions. Top grossing territories were the UK/Ireland ($2.6 million on 401 screens) and France ($1.3 million on 199 screens). Combined with the film's solid NA opening, Southpaw earned $21.1 million worldwide on opening weekend. Southpaw opens in India next weekend.
Foul-mouthed teddy Ted 2 grossed just $3.8 million (-47%) from 43 overseas territories this weekend. Seth McFarlane’s underwhelming sequel has grossed $73.8 million internationally and $153.5 million globally. It still has 20 territories to release, but will end up with far less than Ted’s overseas take of $330.94 million.
The Gallows scared up $3.65 million (+68%) from 31 markets and has grossed $9.8 million overseas and $31.3 million worldwide. Russia opened in fourth place with $859K on 777 screens and Brazil opened to $346K from 155 screens.
