NORTH AMERICA: ‘Batman v Superman’ Leads Tuesday with $4.09M; ‘Zootopia’ Continues to Hold Well in Second with $1.91M

Warner’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice grossed $4.09 million on Tuesday to lead the daily box office for a twelfth straight day. The blockbuster 3D superhero film starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill was up 28 percent over Monday, but still down a very sharp 66 percent from last Tuesday. Yesterday’s rebound does suggest that the film (and the marketplace in general) was indeed impacted on Monday by the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Game. Batman v Superman has grossed $267.69 million in eleven days. The film is running a slim 3 percent ahead of the $259.52 million twelve-day take of last year’s Furious 7 (which increased 20 percent on its second Tuesday to gross $4.36 million).

Disney’s Zootopia held steady in second place with $1.91 million. The blockbuster 3D computer animated film was up 37 percent from Monday and down 48 percent from last Tuesday’s inflated post-Easter performance. Zootopia has grossed a very impressive $276.67 million through 32 days. That places the film 22 percent ahead of the $227.12 million 33-day gross of 2014’s The LEGO Movie. Zootopia also passed the $800 million global mark yesterday.

Universal’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 took in $1.23 million to remain in third place. The long-awaited comedy sequel starring and written by Nia Vardalos increased a strong 56 percent over Monday and decreased 45 percent from last Tuesday. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 has grossed a very solid $38.59 million in twelve days and is set to surpass the $40 million mark on Thursday.

Faith-based films Miracles from Heaven and God’s Not Dead 2 claimed fourth and fifth place with respective daily grosses of $0.820 million and $0.724 million. Sony’s Miracles from Heaven was up 58 percent over Monday, while God’s Not Dead 2 was up a similar 59 percent. Respective daily grosses stand at $47.87 million for Miracles from Heaven in 21 days and at a softer than expected $8.80 million for God’s Not Dead 2 in five days.
