Diamond Men

The biggest surprise in "Diamond Men" is the funny, nuanced performance by "The Sixth Sense's" Donnie Wahlberg--the less famous acting brother (and former New Kid on the Block). He inhabits the part of a puffed-up jerk who's got soul, the wild card in an odd-couple partnership with a wise, taciturn older man, Eddie ("Jackie Brown's" Robert Forster).

The crux of the quirky caper flick written and directed by Daniel Cohen is familiar, yet the story's considerable charms make it all worthwhile. About to be put out to pasture by his company after recovering from a heart attack, veteran traveling salesman Eddie is assigned to teach newcomer Bobby the ropes about peddling precious gems. Their Pennsylvania route takes them into the heart of trouble, beginning with a massage parlor/bordello peopled by Tina (Jasmine Guy) and Katie (Bess Armstrong). But it is Wahlberg and Forster who really click as memorably mismatched buddies. Starring Robert Forster, Donnie Wahlberg, Bess Armstrong, Jasmine Guy, George Coe and Kristin Minter. Directed, written and produced by Daniel Cohen. Comedy/Drama. Not yet rated. Running time: 99 min
