Fans of Spanish filmmaker Carlos Saura's 1983 "Carmen" will be disappointed by this loose followup to that music-filled movie. Unlike its wondrous predecessor, which balanced performances with a contrasting story, "Flamenco" (which closed the Montreal fest) is merely a series of vignettes showcasing its male and female performers playing and dancing to the music of flamenco.
Though stunningly shot, scored and directed, the almost wordless "Flamenco" pales as one musical number simply follows another. "Flamenco" is a good calling card for its multi-talented cast, but their onscreen efforts don't add up to a movie.    Starring Paco de Lucia, Manolo Sanlucar and Lole y Manuel. Directed by Carlos Saura. Produced by Juan Lebron Sanchez. A New Yorker release. Musical. Unrated. Running time: 100 min.
