‘Rogue One’ Scores Biggest Thursday Preview of 2016, Begins Overseas Run

Star Wars: Rogue One has finally landed, making a big impression in the North American box office with the best Thursday preview performance of the year. The Star Wars spinoff grossed $29 million on Thursday night, edging out superhero flicks Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($27.7M) and Captain America: Civil War ($25M) in the process. An 85% rating on RottenTomatoes.com seems to indicate that fans could get behind this title, BoxOffice will continue monitoring grosses daily throughout the weekend.

The film opened is now open in 47 overseas territories, grossing around $33 million and setting the pace as the top film across all markets as it enters the weekend with $62 million worldwide. Top performers include the United Kingdom ($5M), Australia ($3.6M), France ($3.1M), and Germany ($3.1M). Disney is reporting that Rogue One has set the highest opening day of the year in Australia, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Scandinavia, and Switzerland. Japan and Spain join the mix today, with the film still scheduled to expand to South Korea on December 28 and China on January 6.
