BOX OFFICE: In 2012, Russia Receives Good -- And Bad -- News

on January 14, 2013

Last week, Russia released its 2012 box office report and the results were mixed. Receipts for the year totaled $1.27 billion, an 8 percent increase over 2011, though short of the 12 percent increase some analysts predicted in the fall. The top ten moneymakers of the year were:

1) Ice Age: Continental Drift $50,078,212
2) Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted $49,354,065
3) The Avengers $43,677,418
4) The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 $42,787,190 5) MIB 3 $36,541,051
6) John Carter $33,369,163
7) Skyfall $25,187,613
8) Wrath of the Titans $22,262,485
9) Battleship $21,998,644
10) The Amazing Spider-Man $21,912,133

For the first time in a decade, not a single Russian film made the list. In fact, the highest-grossing Russian film to make the chart, Roman Prygunov's Dukhless (Soulless) does so all the way down at #25 with a gross of $13.3 million. However, this year is already off to a better start for local Russian productions: the cartoon Three Bogatyrs on the Distant Shores has already made $29.1 million in its first three weeks of release, which should be more than enough to enter the top ten of 2013.
