'Stalingrad' Breaks Domestic Box Office Record, Looks to Surpass 'Despicable Me 2'; 'Fifth Estate' Flops

on October 28, 2013

Stalingrad has become the most successful domestic film of all time at the Russian box office. Fyodor Bondarchuk's WWII epic is the first Russian film to be released in the IMAX 3D format and has already grossed an estimated $38.4 million in the country. Stalingrad has been selected as Russia's official entry for the Academy Awards. Stalingrad should overtake the $35.2 million earned by Despicable Me 2 in the coming days.

Gravity posted its first weekend under the $1 million mark. The sci-fi film has performed remarkably well in shadow of Stalingrad's 3D blockbuster run. Gravity has grossed a total of $19.4 million in Russia after four weekends. The Fifth Estate tanked in its Russian premiere with a debut in the $300K range.
